The more I think about it, the more I realize that Gas may have been the most 80s phenomenon ever.

Very much so, although Gas was something of the original model, arriving eight years or so earlier.
You can even close your eyes and convince yourself that elements of one guy's story were part of the other guy's narrative, and plenty of elements (the fake boxing career, the domestic assaults) belong to both timelines.
