Veteran's Day Off-Work Check

Post by Centerfield » Fri Nov 10, 2023 8:52 am

Happy Veteran's Day! And thank you to our vets!

Not to sound too 'merica, but I don't understand why all offices aren't closed for Veteran's day. Who's working today?

Thank you. It was an honor to serve.
Unfortunately, my company doesn't choose to honor us vets, no matter how much patriotic merchandise they peddle, so I'm working.
And pissed.

I have never insulted anyone. I simply describe them, accurately.

Three day weekend here, but getting ready for KB craft fair thing
tomorrow so I'm not sitting with my feet up. Was mad at myself for not
getting small bills yesterday for change but then found Chase to be open
today which surprised me.

Happy Veteran's Day!

We'll be here tomorrow: https://www.hopsonthehudson.com/copy-of ... s-market-1

When the gov't first decided to steer holidays to Monday (late '60s?) regardless of the actual date (Washington/President's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day) Veterans Day
was included in that group. But some WWI vets were still living at that point and, to many of them, the exactness of what was originally known as 'Armistice Day' -- the
11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month -- was sacred to enough of them that objections caused it to be restored to 11/11 regardless of day of the week.* Honoring
it on the 10th this year is mostly a case of satisfying labor deals, often public sector jobs, that guarantee workers a set number of holidays even if those fall on a day
when they'd normally be off anyway.
My county library system decided they'd 'honor' Vet's Day this year by closing on Friday the 10th AND Saturday the 11th (ahead of the Sunday and Monday when they're
always closed) thus creating a four day weekend out of it all.

* From 1971 thru 1977 Veterans Day was moved to the 4th Monday in October before reverting to its original date in 1978
