C.W. McCall was a persona Bill Fries had come up with for local commercials. When the voiceovers started making him some money, he started cutting records as C.W., had a hit, and left his old name behind.

Kind of like Chubby Checker. The stage name was supposed to be a character, not a career. It was as if, mid-career, Carol Burnett just changed her name to Eunice.

Yeah, 'CONVOY' was the bigger hit ... but this one was better

Most recent report I read was that he was walking along an interstate (an odd choice start with) and then, for some reason, tried to cross the road and was hit by a dump truck!

It's a sad mystery. Steelers really needed him and it's awful to see such a young fellow die

It's a really strange way to die, for a guy supposedly as fit, healthy and alert as anybody being that he was in good enough shape to play quarterback in the NFL.

Sounds like suicide.

Oh that's horribly sad. What a funny guy.

I always recall being at a show in Carolines, where they seat you on these really narrow tables opposite other people. Gilbert is on fire this night, starting off with his bit where he turns thanking the audience for coming into a diatribe where he'd desperately like to kill and dismember all of us, getting more and more gruesome and yet funnier with every word; it's like 45 seconds into the show, I'm laughing so hard I can't breathe, and I look across the table to this Wall Street douche with a blank look on his face who just doesn't get it. Years later I was at the show that was recorded for the Aristocrats movie.

Funny bastard. Deserves his own thread full of YouTube video in the coming days.

The papers mention 'after a lengthy illness' but it was nothing I had heard about previously.

I also saw him many, many moons ago in some east side comic spot, so long ago that he was still pretty much an unknown.
He was one of three or four that night but he was the one who had me busting a gut.
