The New York Times is reporting that Duke Fakir, the last of the original Four Tops, died today at the age of 88.
Their post mortem juke box will play forever in my mind, and it's the same old song.

One of the biggest and best developments of that hazy phantom zone loosely called the sixties is the way that American blues music lit a fire under so many British kids that they dove into it and then brought it back to the country that had birthed it. There was nobody more central to this little miracle than John Mayall, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of ninety.

If nothing else, Mayall was one of the greatest natural talent scouts this side of Branch Rickey. In 1965, he signed Eric Clapton for his Bluesbreakers. Peter Green, of the original Fleetwood Mac, came along later, as did John McVie, [Mick Fleetwood, Aynsley Dunbar,] Jack Bruce, and Mick Taylor. On his own, his albums were delightfully eclectic, from his acoustic period with Jon Mark and Johnny Almond to his jazz excursions with violinist Sugarcane Harris and Blue Mitchell. In 1970, on a massive double-record set titled Back to the Roots, he brought all of the alumni back. We need a sampler.

P.S. When the Rolling Stones needed to replace the deceased and founding member Brian Jones, one of their first acts was to consult with Mayall to ask him who he thought were some of the hottest guitarists around. Mayall recommended his own Mick Taylor and the rest is history.

On the first day of my internship at the Bridgeport Post the city editor assigned me to tag along with the City Hall reporter and we headed over to the mayor's office a few blocks away. As we walked into his outer office, sitting with her mother was Miss Puerto Rico Bridgeport in very large, ruffly and colorful pageant gown that seemed to cover much of the sofa. Walking out of the inner office was Famous Amos, who was looking to conduct some sort of business with the city. He was very friendly. Mayor Bucci, with a half-eaten cookie in his hand, introduced him to the beat reporter, who then introduced the very green, starstruck intern. "Kid, have a cookie," Bucci said, handing me an already opened bag of chocolate chips. It was a surreal scene, and I knew right there that I had chosen the right career.

He and the band were playing the night of that horrible club fire in 2003 in Rhode Island. I never played a club gig after that without scoping out where all the exits were.
