Re: The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023

I had a friend named Dave from Little League and school way back when. He was the best visual artist I had ever seen but he always had a misanthropic streak, which kind of made it easy to drift away from him. I ran into his father (just a terrific guy) at the library some time ago, and he had a version of Dave's portfolio with him. What he showed me was astounding — Dave's skills and artistic vision had expanded vastly since school — but his dad was the one out hawking his stuff, because Dave's anti-person persona was largely just a front for being terrified of people and their judgments of him. I didn't know how to tell Mr. A. that his son had just alienated all of us in growing into the asshole he had always threatened to be.

Dave drifted into tattoo art — down in Georgia — seemingly specializing in art for hate's sake. And when he posted his shit online, it was clear that, although he was certainly good enough by tattoo standards, his artistic hand and artistic eye had suffered over the years. I can only speculate as to why.

Two weeks ago, he surprises everybody by confessing online that he has accepted that he is a total asshole, and stating he's working on it. That stuff he tried to pass of as being funny was really just being malicious. We were all pretty stunned after all these years, but none of us wanted to respond with ... "A good place to start, Dave, might be removing the Gilgo Beach murder victims from your featured tattoo specialty subjects."

If that is just one example of his assholeness it may never be expunged.

I could do it.
I already found him on your Facebook page. Trouble is he’d see I’m your friend Edgy and figure it out.

So don’t worry, I won’t do it

I'm thinking figuring out where not being an asshole starts is a journey most of us have to take on our own, and directly telling an asshole how not to be an asshole makes said asshole feel pushed around and judged, and quick to respond as an asshole.

But you do what you gotta do. It's not like those women don't deserve an advocate.

Well anyway since I can’t see most of his posts, I wouldn’t see the pictures of them anyway.

But it does seem tacky. Unless as you say, he was being an advocate. Which in that case , is kind of touching in its uniqueness

No, I was describing you as an advocate.

He's more of a nihilist.

We had flooding in our family room, downstairs bathroom and garage from the rains last night.
And we're supposed to go to our granddaughter's 21st birthday party today.
Oh yeah, and here are tornado alerts in our area.

Sand tiger sharks fart. They take in air from the surface to make them more buoyant, and what goes in must come out. When they want to sink lower, they fart!

Just 9 months ago we spent a whole day in Lahaina, Maui. It was charming and beautiful, full of laid-back, happy people.

It's all gone. Heartbreaking.

Sandra Bullock's (apparently long term) boyfriend died a couple days ago. I have no idea who the guy was but it was ALS and
it's been in the news the last few days after what was certainly a very difficult last year or two.
And the only reason I bring it up is that I happened to pass a supermarket tabloid earlier today, one printed within the last week
or so but obviously prior to the last few days, with blaring headlines of how Bullock and her guy were on the ropes complete with
'insider' reports of screaming fights, separate bedrooms, and it being only a matter a time before she threw him out.

Yeah, oops!
And even leaving aside for a moment how embarrassed the magazine itself should feel, Americans should be, but of course
aren't, ashamed of themselves for reading and supporting those rags.

Last month, for the first time ever according to Nielsen, regular or linear TV (broadcast and cable) made up less than half of all TV watching.
