How can KC, once known for touting the defensive skills of a
Rey Ordoñez and how his offensive non-prowess didn't really
hurt his baseball team, possibly be trusted with the national
security codes for the country's nuclear arsenal.?
It's sheer lunacy that he's even on the ballot!!

How long do we think it should be for a politician to be forgiven for comments made in the past?
We all said dumb shit when we were younger. But should that be how we are measured today?
How long is enough?

Let's just say I'm glad the internet didn't exist when I was in college.
That being said, I think the statute of limitations for "I'm a BLACK NAZI!" is pretty, pretty, pretty long.

Yes. We should not allow something that vile to be dismissed without an apology or retraction, no matter how long ago the person said it.

The Dems should win in a landslide simply by running against Vance. He really would be just one heartbeat away from the Presidency. The orange madman would be in his 80s, fat, out of shape and in bad health no doubt and declining mentally day-by-day-by-day. Vance is a dangerous, dangerous nutjob.metsmarathon wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 9:41 pm All this with a side helping of the words president jd Vance.

Manchin Won’t Endorse Harris After Her Call to End Filibuster Over Abortion Rights
“Shame on her,” Joe Manchin, the independent senator from West Virginia, said after Kamala Harris reiterated her support for ending the Senate practice. “She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy.”

No. It's a vehicle to exploit for minority rule. What a tool this Manchin is. Just go away, already. Like the orange madman won't bully a GOP majority senate into killing the filibuster in like two and a half seconds if he's the next President.

Of course, without [the filibuster], Joe Manchin would have been one senator in a hundred, and a senator from a state with four electoral votes. Nobody would have to come to him, hat in hand, to beg for his vote. The TV hits would dwindle to nothing. Even the lobbyists might not flock the way they used to, because he wouldn’t be able to serve their purposes as well without the ability to stall legislation aimed at their profitable spoilage of the natural world. It would get awfully lonely on his yacht.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 10:02 pm Manchin Won’t Endorse Harris After Her Call to End Filibuster Over Abortion Rights

What is the "Holy Grail of Democracy"?
I would guess that it's the right to vote. After that is a Constitution.
Most of the rest is just systems, mechanisms, norms, and traditions. Some are more important than others, but none truly sacrosanct.

“She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy.” That's quite a lot of hyperbole.
The term "Holy Grail" certainly gets overused. My kids were once watching an episode of Pawn Stars and I overheard someone pitching the "Holy Grail of Marilyn Monroe collectibles." I figured it had to be the white dress she wore in The Seven Year Itch. (The one where the sidewalk vent caused the dress to billow around her legs.) But no, it was a hairpin that she once owned.
Eye roll.

Creepiest use of Marilyn Monroe Seven Year Itch Imagery. But a great lead guitar solo.

The thing about the filibuster is, don't think it'll come crashing down if the Democrats get a majority without Manchin and Sinema. There are 3 or 4 Democrats who quietly also want to keep the filibuster and were happy to let those two take the heat for it. They'll be exposed if the Democrats manage to hang on to the Senate.

I don't, though I dream about it. Given our current demographics and extremely polarized and dug-in electorate, with Dems concentrated in large cities, Dems can't get a Senate majority without Senators from purple or even red states. Politics has changed so much in just the last 10 or so years, that looking back, it really was a goddamn miracle of miracles that Obama was able to pass the Affordable Care Acr.Lefty Specialist wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 1:55 pm

If the deranged madman can't win Florida, it's all over for him.
https://www.independent.co.uk/Donald Trump’s lead in his home state of Florida has dwindled, putting it in play for Kamala Harris, a poll suggests.
The former president leads the vice president by just two percentage points in the Sunshine State, where he has his Mar-a-Lago residence, according to a Thursday survey by Napolitan News Service conducted by RMG Research, which has historically favored Republicans.
[***]
The survey’s narrow margin shows how much the political scene has changed since Harris entered the race in late July.
The GOP nominee was leading the state by nearly nine percentage points when Biden dropped out, FiveThirtyEight polling averages show. Harris has somewhat tightened the gap in a state that Trump won in 2020 by 3.3 percentage points.

With the deadly hurricane bearing down on Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis refused to take a call from Kamala Harris to discuss Federal Aid. This reminds me of the Louisiana governor(Bobby Jindal) declined help in the wake of Katrina.

When Katrina hit Louisiana, there was a Republican in the White House. ("Great job, Brownie!" Remember that?) So the motivation this time must be different.
Re: 2024 Presidential Election - Take II
I remember how Chris Cristie lost favor with Republicans when he had his picture taken shaking hands with a Democrat to discuss aid for hurricane relief. I think DiSantis is afraid of similar backlash from MAGA.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 2:08 pm When Katrina hit Louisiana, there was a Republican in the White House. ("Great job, Brownie!"
