The first vote I ever cast was for Jimmy Carter.

Four minutes! Impressive.

I had twenty-two in the pool. I was a Republican from 1980-86 until
becoming a registered voter independent of party participation.

I'd give my right testicle to have Jimmy in office for
'25-whenever instead of the steaming pile of shit that's
on deck and what may be in store for us...

Amen.
Jimmy is having a last laugh over that aforementioned steaming pile of shit.
Because of the 30 day National Mourning Period, all the flags in D.C. will be at half staff during the inauguration.

Well, he could ban the half-mast thing later that afternoon
and cite presidential immunity and have Trump flags raised.

Who the fuck knows what's really in store at this point....

My first vote was ‘76. I’ve voted for the Democrat in 13 straight elections.

I was drafted into a presidential debate in my Social Studies class in eighth grade. Given the choice of who to debate on behalf of, I chose Congressman John Anderson. I wasn't really a supporter, but I was a Met fan, and figured that, if I had to participate in this thing, I might as well support the long shot.

Anyhow, Mark Peugeot was instead assigned Anderson, and Rich Katz (or possibly Frank Torchia) was assigned Governor Reagan, and it was left to me to defend the policies of the oft-ridiculed incumbent. I tended to blow off Social Studies assignments (most assignments, really), but looking bad in front of the whole class was another story. So, given a rare access to my dad for homework help, I learned President Carter's positions in each of the assigned categories — defense spending, civil rights, gun rights, etc.

Ironically enough, I got the idea I was, for once, the only guy who took the assignment seriously. My dad was able to tell me which candidates were in favor of increasing defense spending, social spending, etc., but I found some sources that gave me nuance, and I learned that everybody supported defense spending, but it was a matter of which guys favored increasing the nuclear arsenal or investing in AWACS and the like, and I cleaned the floor with the other two debaters, particularly defending Carter's foreign aid policy, which, again, a week earlier, I probably didn't really know what "foreign aid" meant. Our class still favored Governor Reagan, but a few votes swung into President Carter's column when they were polled a second time after the debate.

I really learned something about what could happen if I actually showed up prepared for life once in a while ... which I promptly forgot in the weeks that followed.

Mark Peugeot and Frank Torchia now drink liberally from the MAGA fountain. Torchia actually runs fundraisers and produces propaganda films for the guy. Peugeot thinks President Trump is an idiot, although voted for him at least twice and thought January 6 was no big deal. He also has an assault rifle for his Facebook thumbnail pic.

I can't speak for Rich Katz.

The first presidential election for which I was eligible to vote was in 1964.
I was in ROTC and I voted for the most pro- military candidate Barry Goldwater. I didn't bother to learn about his stands on other issues.
I've voted straight Democrat in every election since.
Funny thing, though. Barry Goldwater Jr. is on the Board of Advisors of the company I currently work for, and have met him several times.

This is nice...
The New York Times wrote:Former Vice President Walter F. Mondale thought he would still be around to speak at the funeral for Jimmy Carter, who was a little more than three years his senior.

But even though Mr. Mondale died first, in 2021, he left behind the eulogy he planned to deliver, which will be read at Mr. Carter’s memorial service at Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9 by his son Ted Mondale. Former President Gerald R. Ford, who died in 2006, likewise left a eulogy that will be read by his son, Steven Ford.

I shouldn't be shit-talking Ted just because Tad was a tool.

I'm sure there's a bigger picture out there, but that's DeeDee, Amy, Johnny, Marky (OE: Richie), and Joey. Amy couldn't attend the show, so they played a seven-song mini-concert just for her and her father.

My mistake. I guess I just figured that 1983 = Marky, but checking my sources, it looks like Richie took over in early-ish 1983.

President and Mrs. Carter visited my former employer in 2014. MLive - another other former employer - posted a nice story today about his gracious interactions with staff and students throughout the day. It's a good read.

C-Span is running a marathon of Carter programming. I’m watching him, in his early eighties, engaging every caller with respect and detail, no matter the tone they take with him. As they say in Plains, such a mensch. I missed the opportunity to vote for him by not quite two months in 1980, but remain proud to have handed out leaflets for him (and Pat Moynihan) on Election Day 1976.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Our high school had a political institute program

You had to pick a campaign and be involved

Me and a friend picked the Carter campaign and ran with it. So much so I became our county contact person for events. I spent a good deal of time with Mondale. The immediate reward was a day in the Russell building for the inauguration of the Senate

My first vote was for Carter in 1980
