Olympics. Are you interested?
Re: Olympics. Are you interested?
Yup saw that too. Like what is that supposed to do other than further demonstrate their lack of education.
Oddly enough, I actually have a copy of The Last Supper-it was a paint by number done by my dad I inherited when he passed away. Maybe I should join move it from room to room in protest 😆

The outrage at, and defense of, the opening ceremony pageant has almost outdone the outrage at and defense of Harrison Butker in my social media feed. Goodness, what a bunch of dopes we humans can be.
On the upside, while lying in the chair at the dentist, I saw a game-ending play reversed on appeal via video review ... in beach volleyball!

I also decided at the other place that the Olympiad hasn't truly come around until I've rewatched Mary Carillo's groundbreaking badminton essay.

it's not important. some christians think they're the most persecuted group on the planet, but because they're also uneducated they think everything's about their religion. That's essentially it. They saw something they didn't understand, figured it must be about them and took offense.metsmarathon wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 10:16 am i kinda wish i knew what the hullaballoo was about the last supper....

That was priceless.
Now I'm going to check how many basketballs I have in my garage. They're behind the badminton equipment.

NBC apparently believes that we care a lot what Snoop and Flavor Flav are doing in Paris.
For an intense <10 seconds it's tough to beat the men's 100m dash.
Jordan Lyles wins Gold by .005 seconds for the first American win in 20 years (Usain Bolt had a bit to do with that).

Olympic flashback - 60 years ago, Tokyo
The best part about the clip is when the secondary announcer, thinking that the lead voice was missing the late kick by Billy Mills, starts screaming ‘Look at Mills! Look at Mills!’
He was promptly fired for his efforts.
Billy Mills — birth name Tamakhoche Thehila — was from the Oglala Lakota reservation in Pine Ridge, SD. Orphaned by age 12, he took up running at the Haskell Institute, an ‘Indian School’ in Kansas, and later got a track scholarship to U. of Kansas where he became an All-American in cross country. Following graduation he enlisted in the Marines and was in the reserves when he qualified for the 1964 olympic team in both the 10,000 meters and the marathon.
Still mostly unknown in the larger world of track, particularly compared to world record holder Ron Clarke of Australia and others. But by the final two (of 24) laps there were only two runners still hanging with Clarke and Mills was one of them. Then came that kick. And you runners will especially appreciate this: in the biggest race of his life Mills had bettered his own pr by a stunning 46 seconds. Clarke’s world record was 28:15.6, Mills’ winning time was 28:24.4. He had never before run under 29 minutes. Look at Mills indeed.
He finished 14th in the marathon several days later.
Mills remains the only American, male or female, to ever win an Olympic 10,000 meters.
Now 86 and living near Sacramento, it would be cool if he’s still around when the games come to Los Angeles in four years, and it would be a crime if he’s not part of the torch lighting.

A thrilling men's 1500 m race synched up quite nicely with the lengthy pitching change.

Ten, let me repeat that, only TEN nations participated in breaking (nee breakdancing).
And baseball isn't represented?
Gimmie a break (no double entendre intended)!

Makes sense, seeing as how this country invented baseball, softball, and lacrosse.
Of course we invented break dancing too, but in this country it seems like it's a relic from decades ago.

Re: Olympics. Are you interested?
** Potential spoiler alert **
This was shown this afternoon but they may also be re-showing it as if for the first time in tonight's prime time segment.
A surprise qualifying by the Irish women in the 4x400 relay led to them almost claiming the bronze medal but they
wound up getting nosed out at the line by ... the team from U.K. So close.
A spirited men's high jump competition came down to an American and a New Zealander as both outlasted the favored
Qatari jumper (who was actually from Qatar as opposed to the numerous foreign athletes they've 'bought' in recent years).
The Yank and the Kiwi were tied at the same height and then each missed three times at the next. At that point they
had the choice of either sharing the gold or going to a jump-off. They chose the jump-off (tries at increasingly lower
heights) until one succeeds while the other misses. After two rounds the New Zealander prevailed.
