Before clicking that, I was all, "That's gonna be lung cancer, isn't it?"

For a very long time here, my sig line was one of my favorite quotes of his:
PJ O'Rourke wrote:Republicans are the party that say government doesn't work, and then they get elected and prove it.
Was himself a Republican, of course. But raised many good points all the same, and gave himself and the rest of us a good laugh about it. RIP

I occasionally enjoyed some of his curmudgeonly humor in recent years.
Decades before I was old enough to do any of that, my father and he did some work together at Nat Lampoon.

Over the years in the CPF Holiday Charity Gift Exchanged I've designated Partners in Health as my charity of choice numerous times. The organization has worked in Haiti and other developing nations to treat people with deadly illnesses in ways that are affordable and sustainable with local medical staff taking over operations. Well. the founder of PIH, Dr. Paul Farmer, died in his sleep while working in Rwanda. He was 62.

I should add that if you are at all interested in learning more about Dr. Farmer, I highly recommend the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder.

I've said this before, but man, the death rate for lead singers from grunge and grunge-adjacent nineties bands is just awful.

Screaming Trees were actually from Washington, too. He was a pretty good singer, I thought.

The Amazing Johnathan, "magician" and comedian, 63.

One of the funniest comedians I've ever seen. His act was purportedly his doing magic, but he rarely got a trick completed. He used everything -- prop comedy, violence, silly one-liners -- and kept it up nonstop. You never knew what might happen next.

I was lucky enough to see him live in Las Vegas. I was laughing from start to finish.* He brought up a volunteer and just riffed on things for half an hour.

*Even before the start, actually. The camera focused on me with the subtitle "Kenny Fucking Rogers."

Legendary political reporter Walter Mears, 87.
Mears’ ability to find the essence of a story while it was still going on and to get it to the wire — and to newspapers and broadcasters around the world — became legend among peers. In 1972, Timothy Crouse featured Mears in “The Boys on the Bus,” a book chronicling the efforts and antics of reporters covering that year’s presidential campaign.

Crouse recounted how, immediately after a political debate, a reporter from The Boston Globe called out to the man from AP: “Walter, what’s our lead? What’s the lead, Walter?” The question became a catchphrase among political reporters to describe the search for the most newsworthy aspect of an event — the lead. “Made me moderately famous,” Mears cracked in 2005.

It was a natural question. Mears had to bang out stories about campaign debates while they were still underway. Newspaper editors would see his lead on the wire before their own reporters filed their stories. So it was defensive for others on the press bus to wonder what Mears was leading with, and to ask him.

Sitting here on my desk is a copy of a really poor movie he was in in 1947 - The Brasher Doubloon. It's terrible but he lived it down and had a nice career in spite of that.
