Do you have reservations that there'd be a conviction? Or that the conviction would lead to jail time?

I was of the camp that a conviction of some sort would be found, but that the sentence would be probation etc. No jail time.
Guilty in some degree or another? Maybe. But it will be appealed immediately....
Now that we have a conviction here, a part of me could care less if the verdict is ultimately reversed entirely on appeal.

So long as this conviction contributes to a Biden win and a Trump loss this November, that would be Trump punishment enough for me. Any appeal, I assume, won't be decided until long after the election, too late to prevent a Trump election loss influenced by this felony conviction.

Ideally, though, I'm hoping for jail time, which any similarly situated ordinary citizen defendant would definitely receive, especially given the vicious, vile, remorseless and bullshit laden public comments Trump has been making all along about this prosecution. Of course, any jail sentence would be stayed pending this defendant's appeal. That's fine with me, too.

Would be an ironic shame were they to dip into the Trump playbook and run out the clock on his appeal.

His donation website crashed after the verdict was announced, so many people wanting to donate.

I wouldn't want to be the secret service agent who has to be in Rikers with him.

A lot of lawyers have been deployed to research this exact question, and so far, the answer seems to be yes.

If I had a time machine, I would go back to the Constitutional Convention and tell James Madison about Donald Trump. (And about Sandy Hook too.)

Nah. Alito and his gang of scumbag partisan hacks will grease the skids for Trump.

And did I say "run the country"? Because I meant "ruin the country". Ruin.

Well, I understood that a parameter of the question is that the conviction is upheld. You're suggesting that the conviction is upheld but that a potential jail sentence is overturned?

Who knows? They make it up as they go along. They can rule that a sitting President cant be incarcerated. Or that he's immune from criminality. Or that he should be the President even if he loses the popular vote and never officially wins the electoral College. It can do whatever the fuck it wants to do and this court often does. If it was so determined, it could reinstate slavery.

I was just trying to find out what the parameters of the question were.

I thought the question spoke for itself: an elected president who, during his term, has a prison sentence hanging over his head. And so I made a joke about Rikers. I suppose that in reality, the Governor of NY would agree to suspend the sentence at least for the duration of his term. But who knows? This is certainly uncharted territory.

NPR: Legal Experts say Trump's conviction unlikely to lead to a prison sentence

This pretty much jives with the handful of opinions I heard last night in the aftermath of the verdict.

According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, one in 10 Republicans are less likely to vote for Trump after his felony convictions.

It seems like it.

If you're going after Donald Trump, you have to know to keep things squeaky clean on your side. Such a shame.
