Strategic Growth Plan 2022

Post by Johnny Lunchbucket » Sun May 01, 2022 10:44 am

Garden this year: Carrots, green beans, bok choy, broccoli raab, various herbs.

Early shoots of the latter three inching up. Beans went in this morning.

TRying to overcome a bad 2021 (brussels, other lettuces got all moldy and diseased). If you guys need sage come on over we could feed the world with that.

Brussels take some special effort.

I'm way behind schedule. It's been cold here and we've had frost warnings
several nights still. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Need to get crackin', It's May 1st!

We're not doing them this year after results of the last 2. In 20 we got 1 or 2 stalks of small sprouts out of several plants, the rest got moldy. Last year they grew big but produced only mold.

June 3rd, and still not quite done...

On or around the day that Piggie passed I put in 8 tomato plants. Did
something I never did before, planting 4 varieties of big tomatoes in one
row and 4 varieties of cherry tomatoes in another row. Have a row of the
surviving thyme, oregano and a mint plant that just appeared out of the
blue but right in line. I've never planted mint, so I guess it migrated from
next door because they have it in their flower beds. Need to get a basil
plant over the weekend to round out that row. This morning I got four
pepper plants; poblano hot, hot cayenne, tabasco hot and red chili. They
are in the front row. No crawly stuff this year like cukes or zucchini.
Have a small area I usually stick something, haven't gotten the mojo yet.

*he says after slipping on the hill and landing on his butt* outdoor stuff has been a lot harder with one arm. I can do stuff now but anything that physically uses the right arm requires at least twice as much effort (like turning over dirt even)

I just got the hop strings up, and lost my shed key in the process. Still haven't put the netting around the raised garden though, which has some tomatoes, pepper, oregano, mint, and some eaten strawberry plants.

got a bunch of seeds that I should sprout/germinate/whatever. I'd love to grow Watermelon or Pumpkin but I think it's extremely unlikely that they wouldn't get eaten.

We ate mustard greens from the garden last weekend, sautéed with bacon.

Boj choy and broccoli Rabe was planted way too close together but plan is to eat the first of those leaves this weekend.

Some carrots and pole bean vines are doing quite well -- others destroyed by squirrels using the bed to hide shit, and/or cats using it as a shitter, so replanted a bunch of both then covered with netting and quite hopeful for much of both.

Mint is just growing wild

Snap peas, carrots, and basil. The basil is barely coming up, and it's nearly impossible not to grow basil. I'm guessing I've depleted the soil by growing basil in the same spot for the past 4-5 years.

We planted marigolds around our other flowers to keep the rabbits from eating them.

We did that this year too, and it appears to have worked.

I always put netting around my veggies and it's working so far this year. Cucumbers are popping as are tomatoes. Broccoli a little slow and carrots are taking their time. Sunflowers topped 8 feet last week and are looking good as well. Weather's been favorable so far.

Tomatoes are kinda slow here this year. Usually a foot higher by the last day
of June. But everything is green and growing. Gotta get in there this afternoon
and do some serious weeding. Last year the weeds took over and I vowed to
not lose that battle again...

Just brought some crap out to the garage and a squirrel is sitting on the
patio frozen on his hind legs with a cherry tomato in his mouth staring at me.

I said, "what ya got there Mr. McNutty?"
He was like, "found this next door."

Hey! Just saw this, Case.
Be careful. I had my heart attack when I was working on my garden on a very hot day. I was carrying around heavy bags of mulch.
Don't overdo it. If you have to carry heavy stuff for a distance, use a wheelbarrow.

I shopped for my veggie seedlings on a very hot day. I remembered to get bigger eggplantss than last year, but the sun must have been in my eyes and sweat pouring down my face, because generally I got miniatures. I have peppers the size of quarters and tomatoes the size of dimes.

These aren't cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes laugh at these tomatoes. I'm building a dollhouse, just to make my home-grown produce look big.

The best eggplants I grew one year were called 'Japanese eggplants.'
7-8" and the plant wasn't crazy. Haven't seen them since, 6-7 years ago.

I'm pretty low risk for a heart attack. (not to to put the whammy on myself) My
recent EKG was excellent, knocking on 60's door in a few weeks. I have a wagon,
wheelbarrows and my back problems would be a disaster waiting to happen.

my tomatoes are starting to come in, rabbits not withstanding. i have one or two other varieties of tomato hiding in the garden, too, but i'm waiting for them to ripen still.

mostly, i have mostly the black cherry variety.

the lumpy tomato plant (i forget the variety) isn't terribly productive, and may be nearly done for the season. i had one other plant grow big tomatoes, but it grew exactly one tomato that a rabbit got to first. sigh. i have one other plant growing medium-sized red tomatoes, but they're not ready yet. so it's mostly all cherries of varying shades of red.

my pumpkins, having been moved to a less productive location, ain't doing shit. they need better spoil and more moisture than i gave them. my spaghetti squash is also a big sad face. i'm hoping that i get something out of my zucchinis besides one meager zuke. and eventually i may see a watermelon start to grow.

but damn, can i grow cherry tomatoes.

I was wondering about one of the cherry tomato plants I have and they
are dark and almost purplish when ripe. I didn't write down what I got.
I have four different big tomato and four different cherry tomato plants.

Squirrels ate all my Peaches this year, again

I’ve had a couple of cherry tomatoes. No pepper flowers yet. Neighbors have some awesome looking pumpkins

My best crop so far this year is hollyhocks, towards next year

I don’t know why my phone insists on capitalizing peaches

Maybe it thinks it's a proper noun, like Peaches the stripper?
