Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
I like Taylor.
You know what is a fun listen? Ryan Adams' version of Taylor's 1989 album. Some -- but not all -- of his versions are better than her versions. Especially "Welcome to New York," "All You Had to Do is Stay" and "Style."

Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
Taylor's absolutely wild to me. She is clearly talented, writes all (?) of her own stuff and can craft a hook that would win her every television bass finishing tournament if her hooks caught fish instead of tweens and grown-up white women. That said, her RABID fanbase perplexes me. Like, why Taylor instead of Lizzo or Phoebe Bridgers or fucking anyone else. Taylor released 4 different vinyl versions of her last record (with 4 different album colors and cover art) and it sold 800,000 physical copies on the first day to a fanbase that includes a lot of people who don't even own a record player.
At one point during her album's first week, she had ALL TEN SONGS on the Billboard Top 10. All ten!
NO ARTIST HAS EVER DONE THAT BEFORE (I don't think).
That is fucking witchcraft, friends.
Taylor Swift deserves her own thread.

Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
My girlfriend is one of those grown-up white women who like Taylor Swift. She'll occasionally say, "Alexa, play music by Taylor Swift". And then I get Taylor Swift lyrics stuck in my head.
Some day
I'll be
Livin' in a big old city
But all you're
Ever gonna be is mean
I have no objections to Taylor Swift. But I think I've run out of things to say about her.

Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
Tay writes all her own songs, my buttocks. I sisisisimply don't believe it. And there's a non-zero amount of evidence to explode the Taylor-as-super-composer story.
The reason why she has a big fan base of of tweens and grown-up white women is because she is skinny and blonde, with gimlet-shaped eyes, professionally made-up and dressed like a desirable young-adult fashion model, but somehow above all that, and that is aspirational for white females who are younger than her and yearning to grow into her and for grown-up white women who are older than her and yearning to recapture whatever it is they think they've lost that shines in her.
She left behind the Nashville world for the big city and became an ambassador for the city of New York (fwhat?) 10 seconds after she arrived. So she carefully indulges fans on both sides of The Biscuit-Bagel Line who want to believe she's one of them.
Also, since the 90s, everybody in rock and soul and rap had to project some sort of dangerousness in order to become an icon. Only in country, were you allowed to be safe for parents and tweens to listen together. Swiftboat has graduated from the country market and solidified her hold on the pop charts without playing the gangsta or nympho or delinquent. Momz have been waiting for that for ever. You know she's going to get rewarded in gold records and sponsorship contracts. You knew it all along.
Her songs are hugely self referential. So by listening, you can enter into her enviable lifestyle and relationships. She's essentially a living Barbie doll for you to project yourself upon. She curates her image better than any non-Canadian artist ever, and has an army of professional curatorial retainers to help her with that. If and when she gets married, time will stop in the United States for all to watch, and you will turn to the person next to you who is an utterly breathless witness to her nuptials, and you will ask that person what's their favorite song of hers, and they will have no idea.
But really, I have no opinion on the matter.

there's a reason it's short _fanatical_. Most of it's just timing and luck (Which includes what she looks like)
Success is mostly luck. talent and hard work? meh. It's luck.

The only songs of hers I know are the ones she wrote about our break-up. I won't be more specific than that ... it's still too raw.

I'm here, but would never pick this fight with a Swiftie.
My 75-year-old father is the biggest Swiftie I know and my nine-year-old daughter acts with indifference towards her.

Jacob de Grom's success isn't based on talent and hard work? Let's save $40 million, get Jerad Eickhoff back for the minimum, put him in the rotation and hope he gets lucky!Ceetar wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 1:16 pm

Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
Correct. If Jacob deGrom was born to poor parents, with different genetics, in a different part of the country, or didn't get into Stetson, or had his Tommy John at a different time, if his parents didn't suggest he plays sports, or baseball, or build him a batting cage.Bob Alpacadaca wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 2:51 pmJacob de Grom's success isn't based on talent and hard work? The simplest way to explain this is simply: Let's say 100 people are born every year that will make the majors. Do you really think there even remotely even odds that the person bon in Nigeria, or to a poor single mom in Idaho, has the same chance of being that guy than someone born in DeLand, Florida and attends private school? Not even close. Hell, even the initial coin flip of not being assigned female at birth is luck. You could lose out right there!

Re: Taylor Swift Doesn't Deserve Her Own Thread
Of course it's luck. Mostly luck anyways. If he was born with your body, he wouldnt be pitching in the major leagues, let alone winning two Cy Young awards. Everything Ceets said is spot on.
And no, let's not replace deGrom with Eickhoff. That misses the point. deGrom is way better. But mainly because deGrom was luckier.

Still not sure why this thread exists, but when I first saw it I assumed it was going to be about the latest concert ticket outrage, this one involving lots of crying 'Swifties' who were shut out of tickets to her upcoming tour due to on-line malfunctions and/or corrupt ticket selling monopolies.
Not sure what if anything Swift is doing or can do about this but there are calls for her to do it anyway.

I didn't find that as golden as KC did.
Meaning what? Is that your differentiation between the Jews and non-Jews in New York?
Why use that as a difference when we're talking about age and music preferences of New Yorkers?
Should I start calling you Edg-Ye?
With your writing skills, There must be a clearer way to say that.

No, you shouldn't start calling me that. But if that's what you think of me, that's what you think.

You've suggested I'm anti-semitic before on the flimisiest of pretexts. This one is far too stupid to explain and I have no intention of wasting energy in my defense.
