The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023
I did not know (until just NOW!!) that in addition to whatnot being, ya
know, whatnot -- it also means: a light open set of shelves for bric-a-brac.

Don't know about you, but I'm starting to get the feeling that Prince Harry is upset over some stuff.

Every opinion columnist in America, when discussing what is or isn't Constitutional, cites "Constitution expert Lawrence Tribe." (The only exception to this is, of course, George Will, who only cites The Federalist Papers, and maybe Roger Angell.)
I've got nothing against Tribey, but there's got to be somebody else out there.

Maybe some of them see his name and guess that he's Native American and figure they'll look more inclusive by citing him.

I tuned in the Golden Globes show last night.
Unfortunately, it wasn't about Kate Upton.

I'm on Jury Duty and the CPF is blocked on the wifi there , anyway back tomorrow as the judge attempts to pick a jury for a trial. What a long day.
Re: The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023
Bronx County Courthouse?
I was a juror on a murder trial there many years ago.
Don't want to do that again.
Try not to get picked. (or arrested)

I've been empaneled a couple of times for guys doing things not to
brag about and hopefully they got a lot of hard time for.
I look at the defense attorney square in the eyes and I think I have
this face that says he's guilty and you know it and he knows it and they
reject me.
60 and never sat in jury on a trial.

That's because successfully defending a person accused of a crime isn't necessarily about guilt or innocence. But I suppose that a jury never wrongfully convicted anybody of a crime. And nobody probably ever went to the electric chair for a murder they didn't commit. And cops never lied in court.

If I was a criminal court judge, I think I'd be harsh on those convicted, especially those convicted of the very worst, or heinous crimes. So harsh, you'd think I was (shudder) a Republican. But I'd do the best I could to ensure that defendants got a fair trial and all of the due process they're entitled to. I'd be even harsher on anybody on the law enforcement side who knowingly abused the enormous powers that society has given them.

Re: The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023
I was one of four chosen today to sit in the jury , they need to pick eight more and two alternate. Going back in next Wednesday but expectation is they night not even fill the rest by next week. Trial expected to last into February. Obviously I won't be saying anymore on this.
Re: The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023
Sorry, Irish.
Sometimes you can rotated in and out before the final jury is empaneled.
Or maybe that's just a Baltimore thing.

Good for you for serving. Juries NEED people like you. I've covered a number of trials and jury selections. One thing I've always thought is that it's not a jury of peers, but a jury of people who couldn't get out of it. And there is a huge difference.

Re: The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023
i'm on a grand jury right now. kinda fun. i get to see a broad swath of cases in broad strokes, and just get to decide if there's enough evidence to be able to indict. i'm happy to do it, and hope i get called again to serve.
mind you, i'd feel different if i was on a federal- or state- level jury where i'd be driving to newark or trenton, respectively. i'd still want to serve, but it would be a hell of a pain in the ass. this? easy, and i get the days off work paid, too. so there's really no downside.
i was on one jury once, and was de-selected from another once. as an engineer, i very much feel like i'm not always the kind of person they'd want on there - be it one side or the other, depending on the quality of the evidence.

I'm tellin ya, I positively plotzed when I saw this. History of the World, Part II. A 4-night event. Hope the material doesn't get stretched too thin, but if anybody can pull this off, it's Mel Brooks.
