2023 soccer ball thread

Post by A Boy Named Seo » Tue Feb 07, 2023 4:27 pm

Anyone else watching this 4th round FA Cup replay between 2nd tier English team Sheffield United and the darlings of world football, the 5th tier Wrexham Football Club??

It's currently 1-1 in the 81st minute and Wrexham just missed a penalty that would have put them on track to face the Premier League's Tottenham Hotspur. The fact that so many people outside of Wales are watching 5th tier team in the 4th round of a cup tournament has a lot to do with said club's owners - Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. I'm sure the rest of the National League would disagree but they've been great for world football.

You watching?

Yeah, the FA Cup is my absolute favorite competition because of those mismatches you can get.

Sadly, our Welsh heroes gave up two goals in extra time and are gonna be bounced from the FA Cup... :(

I thought it was great. And I think Rob particularly showed the potential of a next gen of hardcore American soccer fans. A lot of die-hard NFL fans seem to dismiss soccer for any number of (dumb IMO) reasons but he saw his town-to-ground Eagles fandom in the people of Wrexham and it totally clicked for him. He'll be a footy diehard forever.

Maybe, but consider your kids getting to grow up in a town where the Syracuse Mets are the team that gives them their identity. They get to grow up with the dream that the team from their second tier city gets to be the one to take down the Yankees, and they will be there and be a part of it all.

Whatever soccer does or doesn't do for you, every kid in England gets to grow up with that dream. That's awesome. They get to say, "Fuck you, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago! We're from Billings and we're coming for you!"

Oh I fully get it. But nearly all of this town's local sports focus is based on Syracuse U. athletics. The Syracuse Mets and Syracuse Crunch (AHL) are very much second rate local draws.

Fman I think you and the fam should go and become the most hardcore Syracuse Pulse supporters ever. Plus, they play in the US Open Cup, which is our version of the FA Cup (amateur teams can get hot and play MLS Cup winners LAFC). That tournament is AWESOME.

I am sure that there are tons of good seats available. I might go if there was promise of a baseball game breaking out. Or if I was hosting friends from other lands who wanted somewhere to act more hooliganny

For any Apple TV subscribers, there's a pretty great series recounting the drama of the failed Super League attempt from a couple years back.

And right on queue, the turds behind the original super league have resurfaced...

As rioting crowds go, 300 seems like it should be containable.

Though I realize that football hooligans are another animal.

Yeah, it's a bummer. It's a 10-year deal but the Athletic reported on an opt-out being entertained because of low subscription rates. I'm a casual MLS fan and have had little interest. I'm sure other casual fans walked away from the league without free access.

If Messi arrives, those numbers will jump like mad, but if not, I don't think the league is magnetic enough to get non-hardcore fans to buy it.

Didyas see the renderings of the new NYCFC stadium. Address would be 42 Seaver Way, and fill in the whole Iron triangle with a hotel and shops

They should put it on the other side of the street so it's 41 Seaver Way

Edit: oh, shit it's actually across the street, nevermind.
