Loder Twenty Three

Post by Edgy MD » Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:17 pm

Kurt Loder longs to retire, but rock news never sleeps.

Def Leppard's famed drummer Rick Allen is recovering after being violently attacked by a teenager outside his hotel in Florida. Because Florida.

Journey is never far from the news, as the triple dosage of good fortune (popular new singer/hit documentary/HoF induction) that brought them right back on top of the money machine has led to sort of drama that bands had forty years ago. Horrible new wives, cash grabs, politics, and internecine litigation have driven away all the classick lineup members except Neil Schoen and Jonathan Cain, each married to one of what have to be two of the worst people in the world, pounding each other with lawsuits, but performing together show after show without making eye contact, because like a divorcing couple, each one feels like whoever moves out of the house loses it. (Jaw-dropping account includes the line "I am fucking your wife.")

Shea Stadium legends Grand Funk Railroad are coming to your town, possibly to lend assistance in your efforts to party down! Some version of the seventies muscle car rockers are embarking on a tour to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their 1973 album We're an American Band. Hide your chiquitas, Omaha!

That Journey story is full of strange, petty shit.

And props to Kurt Loder, who clearly graduated with honors from the "How to Look Like Me" masterclass by Keith Richards.

Loder reporting that soon to be 72 year old Billy Squier is out with his newest stuff in 30 years+. Kinda sounds like a upside-down Everybody Wants You

Some "Everybody Wants You" vibes for sure, but damn, he's still got pretty good pipes for 71. Something about when he says a word that starts with "s" that I think, oh that guy might be a little older.

He's got a cool slur in his vocals that can sound like a bent guitar note.

Billy should probably avoid making a video for this one. Or at least, not hire the team that made the last one.

Michael Anthony has leaked that he's started a nu band with Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X and Aerosmith touring drummer John Douglas. He's keeping mum on who will be singing, but lets on that it's a "really, really cool singer."

My money is on Gino Vannelli (who probably deserves a Desert Island Poll).

This is really news, but I don't think we have a "Things I Didn't Know" thread and this is a thing I didn't know, but Rita Coolidge was a co-writer on "Superstar," despite not getting a credit until 1996.

Along with her still-uncredited writing of the coda to "Layla," I imagine she's got to be the most screwed over songwriter of the early 70s.

Worth noting that Loder's first great legacy, before MTV News became the monster it became, was co-writing Tina Turner's terrific and harrowing memoir, which became the source for the hit biopic What's Love Got to Do with It? As music memoirs go, it's, like, two cuts above.

"Like David Cone coming out of retirement to briefly re-join the Mets in 2003, The Baseball Project has re-emerged with a new album Grand Salami Time!. Let's hope it's better than Cone's 6.50 ERA that sent him promptly back into retirement."

No, and a decent outing actually. 5 strong, got the win. Big day from Mo Vaughn.

I remember seeing the last version of Cone at Big Shea, not having anything left.

I will have to listen to this Basseball Project platter. They are the closest thing to REM anymore

Nothing about Loder, but carrying on the music news...

If you're a Mats fan, then you need to hear this remixed version of Tim. Of course they have offered dozens of outakes and alternate takes on a box set for $$$. Tommy Ramone produced the original but longtime collaborator Ed Stasium (Smithereens, Living Color, Soul Asylum, etc.) went back and remixed the original versions of the album tracks and did a phenomenal job of making a pretty good record even better.

Also, I miss Bob Stinson.

Tim is totally an album that could use the remixing/remastering treatment.

In the kind of rock drama you always suspected you'd read about but always kinda hoped you wouldn't, Darryl Hall has taken out a restraining order against John Oates.
