Choking on Canada

To judge from my social media feed, most of the Northeastern US is being plagued by lousy air quality caused by systems drawing down the smoke from Canadian wildfires. It seems the same patterns that have given us so much pleasantly unseasonably cool weather the last several weeks are now presenting the bill, in a way.

I'm down here below the Mason-Dixon Line, and we're rationing our outdoor activity, so I can only guess what you folks north of me (most of you) are getting. Seawolf is in Rochester and he posted a picture of a sky that looks pretty toxic.

I saw some images of the New York and Philadelphia skylines this morning and the haze was very thick.

My girlfriend's son was arguing that it wasn't safe for him to walk from his front door to the school bus this morning (a walk of about a hundred feet), but he was overruled.

There's going to be a lot of new stock footage for future post-Apocalypse movies.

One of the scrolly bars on the news channels said that NYC was declared
having the worst air quality on the entire planet today. The entire planet.

In fairness, a lot of folks have also been choking on New Jersey. Jersey typically gets higher rainfall than her Easern seaboard neighbors, and does a better job than those neighbors supporting her grasslands, but now those grasslands are turning into starter fuel for forest fires.

It's pretty bad in the 'Cuse. Basically everything outdoors related is cancelled today.

I went for a run yesterday and at the advice of internet wogs I retreated to a woodsier trail where the canopy of tree cover allowed me to at least get my miles in. But it's rough, rough I tell ya

People have been told to wear masks when outdoors.
I'm glad I still have my COVID masks.

Definitely worse out there today than it was yesterday. But at least we're not on fire yet!

Worse than yesterday for sure. It's like sunset at midday. Smelled like something was burning right down the street, not hundreds of miles away. It's going to stick around for a while, too.

Trump would have stopped this smoke from getting across the border.

That purple haze in PA is where I live.
It’s almost possible to look at the sun

It’s just surreal isn’t it?

Same here. The sky is hazy and yellowish. And it smells like burning.

I work on the phone all day.
My mouth is starting to taste like a platoon of soldiers just marched through wearing dirty gym socks.

Too bad. You wouldn't need a lens filter to get some snazzy shots.

You can check your local air quality at airnow.gov. Just type in your zip code.

I'm currently at 270, which is 'Very Unhealthy', but at least that's down from 307 this afternoon which was 'Extremely Unhealthy'.

Good God. We've been improving throughout the day and are currently at 160, which is still in the unhealthy range. But man, 322 ... .

Mask up!

This looks photoshopped. (to me)
