for AFC Defensive Player of the Year (1981).
NEA NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1981).
PFWA NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1981).
NFL sacks leader (1981). George Halas Award
(for (NFL) player, coach or staff member who

(1982). Jets Ring of Honor (2010). His #73
retired by Jets (2004). Second all-time in

Was disallowed from playing youth football
because of his prodigious size.

Back when they still trained at Hofstra I was in the TGI Friday's across the street from there one August afternoon when about eight guys walked in whose only
possible occupations had to be football lineman. For me, a casual football fan, it's very unlikely to recognize the mostly anonymous crew who plays on the line
in the helmet league. Klecko, in part because he was the star and in part for his rather distinctive look, was the only one I recognized. Barely taller than me
(2 inches?) but about 100 lbs larger, he cut an unusual figure to say the least.
