A tiresome thread

We haven't had a thread about tire brands in a while. I was inspired by considering the vast number of brand names in the tire biz but in my 10 minutes preparing this thread I learned that Firestone now belongs to Bridgestone, Michelin owns BF Goodrich, Continental owns General Tire and Goodyear owns Cooper., etc etc

Most of us grew up amid a lot of tire marketing--blimps, jingles "Someday you'll own (bum-bum)..." Indy 500, restaurant review guides, cool logos here (https://www.logolynx.com/topic/tire) --but it occurs to be I have no idea what brand is on my car and the mechanic never asked me for my preference. So is rubber rubber? How do you select tires, by performance, cool logo, price?

Looking down that list, I've/we've had about 3/4's of the brands
at one time or another. I've always been tire-aware. If you asked
me what tires did my Mom's Audi have on it in 1979 I'd quickly
answer Pirellis of course. We currently have General Tires.

I've long been told to stay away from those six-bay big-name
tire shops. Wonder what other people say.

How do you select tires, by performance, cool logo, price?

My primary consideration is tread design - important if you live in snowy climes and you're looking for all-weather tires.
My secondary tradeoff is comfort (including noise - a factor many people overlook) vs mileage guarantee. Some of the tires that give a "soft" ride don't wear well.
As for price, you buy what you can afford within those parameters.
I don't have a "go to " brand and have had many different ones over the years.

Stupid football marketing works. I can't think of Pirelli without thinking of Inter Milan. I have no rooting interest there, and if I did, I wouldn't change what tires I buy. But if Pirlo rocking this kit isn't cool, then I don't know what is.



I buy tires the car or truck almost solely based on affordability. I work 100% from home and wifey is like 60% from home so we pretty much just need them roll straight and handle a little snow a few times a year.

On the bike, I had Michelin Commander II's based on multiple recommendations and they were durable and lasted a very long time. I guess I'd buy something along those lines again when the times comes.

Good God, I just went out to check. Our Mazda has two tires of one brand on the left, and two tires of another brand on the right. The Dodge also has two tires of one brand on the left, and two tires of another brand on the right.

None of these four brands are listed above or brands I'm particularly familiar with. Kumho is one. I think Sumitomo is another.

Kumho is a Korean subsidiary of Chinese tiremaker Doublestar. Sumitomo is a Japanese firm that today controls the Dunlop brand

My wife is running Pirelli run flats on her SUV. I am running Bridgestone run flats on my sports sedan. I have used various Pirelli, Michelin, and Bridgestone tires on our vehicles over the past 10-12 years. I have a good friend that owns an independent tire store. I listen to his recommendation, then purchase the brand he can cut the best deal/price for me so long as it is highly rated for traction on wet/rainy roads.

Had to get new tires recently and I went with these. No complaints. Maybe it will actually snow this winter and I'll get to put them through their paces. For now, they're fantastic at handling extreme downpours.

I have a work-issued vehicle (2023 Jeep Commander) and suffered a blowout. Went to change the tire only to find out that it did not come with a spare....and upon investigation was told that's more-or-less common practice these days. Who knew?

I found that out when my son got a flat tire in the California desert a few years ago, and found that his rental car didn't have a spare tire. He had to sit in the desert night for over two hours until AAA was able to get to him.

I typically go with whatever the mechanic says , so Goodyear or Michelin tires over the years

Full set of Yokohama tyres today , $809 for those , oil change and inspection, need to go back next week for water pump, radiator and timing belt , going to cost a bit more 😭
