All-Purpose Mare Winningham Thread

Post by Johnny Lunchbucket » Mon Mar 18, 2024 3:32 pm

Did you know St Elmo's Fire actress Mare Winningham became a folk music performer? I didn't.

Saw her perform 3 songs last night-- one on a guitar, one on a dulcimer and one on piano. Good singer

Bonus Mare Winngham trivia--
--attended high school with Kevin Spacey
--once was Val Kilmer's girlfriend
--about to turn 65 years old

I've been a CPF member since 2007 and just bursting with Mare Winningham content this entire time!

(I mean I haven't but still)

All of the facts you just presented are new to me. I remember her from St. Elmo's Fire and quite literally nothing else. Ok, correction, she was in the one movie with Jennifer Jason Leigh where they played sisters. Though I think in that one JJL was the singer, not Mare. Or were they both singers?

I further remember her from Threshhold, a medical drama film that I thought was an HBO production, but only seemed like it because it was one of those not-rated-R films that HBO could show repeatedly during the daytime. She also gets in a lot of Westerns, I think because her thin lips make her ideal for playing women of rigid virtue.

If St. Elmo's Fire wasn't terrible in every other way, her character and Rob Lowe's ending up together in the end would have alone been enough of an outrage to hate all over it.

She was in the "Girl From the North Country" musical based on Bob Dylan songs. She and the show were really good. She sang Tight Connection to My Heart, Forever Young and Like a Rolling Stone.

I checked her Wiki bio just to be sure she isn't Marg Helgenberger.
I was right.
I have never seen a single movie she was in, and maybe only a few TV shows (Starsky and Hutch and Law and Order and I have no recollection of which episodes) she may have been in.
Sorry.

Yuck. I always thought she was homely and when I found out she as married to A Martinez at his absolute hottest, I was stunned at his mistake.

Only lasted a few months though so he came to his senses.

St Elmo is one of those flicks I hate so much I can't stand not to watch.

Even the theme song was overwrought.

The theme-song video is first-rate cheese. It's like a cheese sampler gift box from Williams-Sonoma.

At the end, the cast all broods away upon John Parr's set, and John walks among them and encourages them with shoulder slaps and the like, and they begrudgingly but lovingly look up at him, like, "Thanks, John Parr, my life isn't quite what I planned it to be but I've always got John Parr in my corner, God bless you."

Oh, I'm a nightmare.

But I return to this thread to remind you to look for Mare in the 2020 Tom Hanks western News of the World, playing a woman of rigid virtue.
