Welcome Costco Shoppers _ Keeping Our Books

Post by MFS62 » Thu Jun 06, 2024 11:13 am

But you won't find books here year round.
According to The New York Times, the warehouse retailer will stop stocking books regularly starting in January 2025. The company plans to only sell books during the holiday season, from September through December.
Executives told The New York Times that some books may be sold at Costco stores from time to time, but not in a consistent manner.

The dumming down of America.

That should be "dumbing". (Couldn't resist!)

I've been hearing that some thrift stores are no longer accepting books (or picture frames, for that matter) as donations.

Have any of you come across AJ & Big Justice?

They have taken the internet by storm. There's something about the wholesomeness of these guys plus their weirdness-- people are fascinated nd are making them all kinds of hilarious tributes. This Costco routine was their big bang

I changed the thread title to include fights to keep books in all areas.
For example, the Texas case that had some removed books put back on the shelves.
Eight books dealing with subjects including racism and transgender issues must be returned to library shelves in a rural Texas county that had removed them in an ongoing book banning controversy, a divided panel of three federal appeals court judges ruled Thursday.

no longer regularly stocking books at costcos and banning books at public libraries are very different topics.

There are reports that the hard-to-beat-for-value rotisserie chicken will soon be packed in a plastic bag, and not the container.

Would this be at Costco, or at Texas libraries?

I read about this elsewhere and while it is easy to point and make light of "America getting dumb" or whatever, this is probably a wise business move for Costco. Most of the products they sell simply require the manufacturer's box be flopped out on the shelf/floor for customers to put in their carts. The books took a lot more manual labor to lay out properly, more akin to stocking shelves at ShopRite, and that added labor expense is not part of Costco's business model.

People don’t go to Costco for hard-to-find backlist books - they pick up bestsellers - which arrive in cartons just like every other product. You take them out of the carton the same way you take out boxes of tissues or laundry detergent. It’s a lazy and sad decision - especially for Costco’s customers who live nowhere near a bookstore.

Just because people aren't buying physical books doesn't mean they aren't reading or that America is being dumbed down. As with CDs and music, there are many ways to obtain books without buying paper.
