Will you be watching the debate Thursday night?
What will you be looking for?

I'm not going to watch live. I'm sure the best of the bullshit will be regurgitated for weeks. I doubt there will be much new substance as there are very few unknowns about either candidate. The bar is basically to not mix up words nor shit their pants on live TV.

I'm also not sure that Trump won't find a way to wimp out of it.

It will boil down to Biden reminding people who he is, and the other guy trying to get people to forget what he is.
I'm not sure I'll watch it live.

I feel obliged as part of my citizenship to watch these things, though I tend to feel too nauseated and depressed to finish.

The manner in which they are conducted is outrageous. What they reveal about the candidates is less than useful, and when useful, almost always in a negative sense.

The electorate won't typically "remember" such moments, so much as they will mostly have missed it in real time, and have them fed back to them later, devoid of context.

Biden needs to remember who he is and where and when and why. That is pretty much going to be the key takeaway from this event one way or the other.

You think Biden doesn't know who he is? Or where and
when and why he will be there?

I mean, geez...

I have no doubt in my my mind that (1) the president knows who he is, (2) the president knows where he is, and (3) the president knows why he's there.

I further have no doubt in my mind that (4) he's not as mentally swift as he once was, and that (5) even at his swiftest, he was capable of doing and saying some silly and embarrassing stuff.

I finally have no doubt in mind that (6) at his foggiest, the president is the mental superior of his opponent, (7) he's got a stuttering disorder, and that makes him something of a neurodivergent, but that's hardly the equivalent of being stupid, and (8) there's a whole bunch of deception going on to try to convince me otherwise. It's not particularly sophisticated deception, but folks tend to believe what they want to.

What matters to me is (9) whether we choose democracy over fascism. The rest is a dog and pony show.

No interest in watching. What am I going to learn ...
- that Biden is a part-time doddering old fool who'll claim that the deficit and inflation went down during his administration?
- or that Trump is a full-time despicable excuse for a human being who will say more false things in his first paragraph than most politicians will in six months?

I'll watch, hoping for a shark/electric boat moment out of Trump. Or a dozen of those moments.

I won't learn anything I didn't already know, but if Cheeto Mussolini lets his freak flag fly in front of a national audience, that'll be a good thing. I want Biden to get under his thin skin early and often.

I think that's the story and refuting it is the biggest thing he can gain from a debate between two people we are all very familiar with a already.

The problem is, unless he shits himself or has a Giuliani hair dye moment , his supporters will claim he won the debate. He has set a very low bar.

Mets are off so I will watch until I'm too nauseated by the whole thing.

I actually haven't ruled out the possibility that ol Orange Shitdick will come up with some pathetic excuse to bail on the entire thing. We'll see.

That's exactly my take. Every single thing Trump said was a fucking lie. But he speaks forcefully and with confidence. Biden is soft-spoken, stumbling over his words and coming off like a doddering old man who belongs in a rocking chair.

I think "I refuse to debate a felon" might have been a good move after all

But on the other hand, some money grubbing network would have just hosted Trump vs Kennedy without him and that would have been worse

It's a heck of a lot easier to tell a lie than to refute the lie. And when the guy's telling 20 lies a minute, fuhgeddaboutit. What chance does Biden have? He'd need an hour to answer 45 seconds worth of Trump bullshit. And his followers believe QAnon, on top of that.

At what point do the Dems consider nominating somebody ... Anybody ... other than Biden?
It's going to be a longshot, and an unprecedented move, but it may be necessary.

It'd be nice if the moderators would make an effort to call out bullshit.

I'd agree on a pinch hitter for Biden.
