Joan Jett & The Blackhearts blew me away, theater was just about full when they came on , Joan looks great and played a mean guitar, the Blackhearts are an excellent band , she really got the crowd going before Alanis

I was at Jones Beach the weekend before for the Outlaw Music Festival: the lineup was Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss and Celisse.

We missed Celisse because it took forever to get out there. We skipped Willie Nelson since he was ill and didn't perform and we didn't need to see his son's band (and we were dreading the drive back).

This was the 14th time I've seen Bob Dylan. He put on a pretty good show, doing a number of covers (Little Queenie (the Chuck Berry song); Mr. Blue (a song by the Flamingos); Stella Blue (a Grateful Dead song) and Six Days On the Road (covered by many). Other than those he played a few songs that the crowd would recognize (Highway 61 Revisited, Ballad of a Thin Man, Simple Twist of Fate and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight) and a host of lesser-known songs. Not his best, not his worst, happy I was there.

Plant and Krauss were good. I'd seen them before and they were better than that first time. They did a couple of Led Zeppelin songs (Rock and Roll, The Battle of Evermore) and three Everly Brothers covers (The Price of Love, Stick With Me Baby and Gone Gone Gone). Well worth seeing.

So far this year, I've seen the following:

Firehouse at Niswonger Performing Arts Center, Greeneville. Excellent show. CJ Snare, the lead singer, died about a week before the concert, but the guy they got to replace him sounded just like him.

Postmodern Jukebox at Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville. Always a blast, I had to pee really bad the whole time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top & Black Stone Cherry at Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville. Was sat next to an annoying, drunk, morbidly obese guy who squeezed me out of my seat. Was excellent, nevertheless. Lynyrd Skynyrd killed it.

Three Dog Night at ETSU Martin Center for the Arts, Johnson City. Excellent show. Some kid opened for them, don't remember who it was.

Disturbed, Falling in Reverse and Plush at Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville. Disturbed was just "very good" until the last few songs, then they killed it. Falling in Reverse was great. Was sat next to an obese man on one side and a morbidly obese man on my other side who squeezed me out of my seat. People are too fat.

Tool and Elder at Spectrum Center, Charlotte. Hypnotic, probably the best concert I've seen so far in 2024.

Going to see Creed, Three Doors Down and Finger Eleven at PNC Pavilion in Charlotte tomorrow night.

My wife, son & I are headed to see Counting Crows opening for Santana tomorrow night at the Lakeview Amphitheater, a beautiful outdoor venue just down the road from us and off of Onondaga Lake. I'll be back there next month to see the same Skynyrd & ZZ Top tour that CT attended.

Some good free shows at the NYS Fair, as is the case every summer, including Blue Oyster Cult on Tuesday, August 27. And in a sense, I am opening for them - as I scored my own gig, playing a 2-5 PM set at Daniella's Steak House/Patio, adjacent to the Chevy Court where BOC will play at 6.

Lakeview Ampitheater...I saw Dave Matthews Band and the Goo Goo Dolls there when I lived in New York. It is an awesome venue. Another great one that's not TOO far away is the ArtPark in Lewiston. I only went there once, but I wish I'd gone more.

A couple years ago, Lynyrd Skynyrd came around my home city and I opted not to go because, at the time, they had only one living original member, Gary Rossington. I was like, why bother, it's basically a cover band at this point. Well, Rossington died, and I finally bit the bullet and decided to see them this year, because soon enough I imagine there will be no Lynyrd Skynyrd at all, so I wanted to see them while it's still possible. And they still have Rickey Medlocke, who was close enough to being an original member, as well as Johnny Van Zant, who has been with them almost forty years, despite being their "new" lead singer after Ronnie Van Zant died.

Saw the Pretenders last Friday night in Boston at the Fenway MGM Theater. Next door at actual Fenway Noah Kahan was playing a show for what looked like an army of teenaged girls.

Pretenders were great. Chrissie Hynde sounds like she always has and they played 17 songs in their set and two encores totalling 7 more songs. In addition to a lot of pretty good sings from the last couple of Pretenders albums they did all their hits except, surprisingly, Brass in Pocket. There are few acts from their period still performing (no Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads) so it was great to see them and them sounding so good (was the loudest show I’ve beennto in a while).

I saw ZZ Top for free at the NYS Fair a few years back, and was glad to do so as it was their last local appearance before Dusty Hill passed away.

Rickey Medlocke is awesome if for no other reason that it's easy to imagine that LS has brought Vigo the Carpathian on to play guitar solos.

Creed gets some flak and has been one of those bands people like to pick on, like Nickelback, but honestly, they absolutely killed it and were totally awesome. They put 110% into all their songs, including their less popular ones.

Finger Eleven was canceled because there was a storm a-comin' and they wanted to get us out before it hit—and it never really materialized in terms of lightning (the fear), but the rain got torrential—but they still came out for a song during Three Doors Down's set. Obviously they did "Paralyzer," their big hit, and nailed it, as well.

Three Doors down was very good, but the lead singer doesn't quite have the voice anymore. But musically they still have it, and I can't knock them too much, either.

All in all, a great show, 12/10, would recommend.

Goo Goo Dolls and Phillip Phillips at Kingsport, TNs Fun Fest on Saturday!

(That's the exact lineup I saw at Lakeview Ampitheatre a few years ago).

Saw Flaming Lips at a lovely outdoor venue in Portland, Maine last night. Their first set was comprised of the entire Yoshimi vs. the Pink Robots album. After a break they played other songs from their catalog. Enormous pink robot balloon sculptures, all the lyrics up on a screen, lasers, smoke, the singer in a giant bubble, they put in a show. Fun time on a beautiful night in a beautiful city.

Maine is gorgeous in high summer.

Saw Phillip Phillips and Goo Goo Dolls last night. For being a provincial little city, Kingsport managed a good turnout as the whole field and much of the bleachers were pretty well packed.

Phillip Phillips is very good. Perhaps I didn't pick up on it the last time I saw him, but he sounds A LOT like Dave Matthews/DMB in every aspect...musically, the way he moves and speaks.

Goo Goo Dolls were great, as well. They managed all their big hits and finished with the classic "Iris."

Not a bad show considering it was in a place not built for music, the high school football stadium.

Next up is Blink-182, opened by Pierce the Veil, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina tomorrow night.

Saw Blink-182 and Pierce the Veil last night. They were both opened by a band called Astronoid, which I'd never heard of. They have a very eclectic sound—I would define them as "space metal." These are their genres per Wikipedia: Post-metal, shoegaze, black metal, progressive metal. I definitely heard the shoegaze and there was some Tool influence, as well, I think.

Pierce the Veil was alright. It's not my style of music, but they put on a high-energy show. I saw a similar band in Falling in Reverse earlier this year, and I'd take Falling in Reverse.

But Blink-182 was excellent. It helps when a band has all the original members and, more importantly, they still LOOK like themselves and even more importantly, they still SOUND like themselves. All the aforementioned boxes were checked. The crowd had great energy, it was awesome.

I've lived in Tennessee for a few years now, but this was actually my first time venturing into South Carolina.

Up next is maybe Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid in Charlotte in late August. I might forego that one because it's on the 26th and one I'm definitely going to, Imagine Dragons (also in Charlotte), is on the 28th.

Was going to see Aerosmith with the mom and dad in Knoxville in October, but Steven Tyler isn't recovering from vocal cord surgery and the tour was cancelled :-(.

Yeah we had tickets for that tour in Buffalo for February 2025. It's a bummer.

I caught Duane Betts when he came through town a couple weeks ago and he was surprisingly great. A solid mix of original and Allmans tunes.

Seeing Dweezil Zappa in a few weeks. Looking forward to that one. Thankfully, he doesn't play any of his own music.

Last night, I went to see Imagine Dragons at the PNC Pavilion in Charlotte. They have a variety of sounds from more intense rock to more poppy and dance. Cannons opened for them; I think I was one of the relatively few who knew who they were and who liked (and knew) their final and biggest song, "Fire for You."

Both performed very well, a great show. Imagine Dragons got the ball rolling quickly as their second song was one of their biggest hits, Thunder, and they performed it like it was the final song of the set, going all out. So you knew it was going to be a good show from the get-go.

It was HOT. My car's thermometer said it was 94 degrees...at 10:30 at night!

Next up in Avril Lavigne back at the PNC Pavilion on September 1.

I originally planned to see Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid in Nashville on the 30th, having bought the ticket and everything, but then decided that would be unfeasible. So I thought perhaps I could see them in Charlotte on the 26th, but going to Charlotte three times in a one-week span (it's a 3.5 hour drive) would be too much. Since I'd already seen Green Day once, I decided to scrap seeing them altogether. 'Til next time. They tour frequently enough, so I'll get to see them again I'm sure.

I was back at the PNC Pavilion in Charlotte on Sunday and saw Avril Lavigne, who was opened by Simple Plan, whose was opened by a more obscure band called "girlfriends." The show was absolutely awesome, I didn't want it to end. I've never been a huge Simple Plan fan, but then again, I'd never seen them live. They killed it with their set and I got to thinking that they could have been the main show all by themselves.

Avril Lavigne was awesome. It was her greatest hits tour and she got all the big ones. Having been a kid when she first came out, it was one of the few times when I felt true nostalgia, but for a night I was transported back to when I was 12 years old. It was a soul-cleansing experience.

Up next is Twenty One Pilots in Duluth, Georgia on the tenth.

Saw Twenty One Pilots last night in Duluth, Georgia. It was my second time seeing them and they might have outdone themselves. It was a totally awesome show and now I wish I could see them again this year. A band called Balu Brigada opened for them. They're kind of a no-name group, but very good, as well.

On the drive home, I nearly hit a black bear.

Up next is Hootie and the Blowfish, opened by Collective Soul, opened by Edwin McCain, tomorrow night in Knoxville.

Saw a concert with three acts last night: Edwin McCain, Collective Soul and Hootie and the Blowfish.

First was Edwin McCain for a few songs. He's most famous for "I'll Be," but he also did "I Could Not Ask for More," which I knew, but didn't know was him. It was a pleasant surprise. He can still sing well and is actually a pretty funny guy.

I'd seen Collective Soul before and knew what to expect with the vocals—lead singer Ed Roland doesn't have it anymore. He's just 61, but he's an OLD 61. Musically, they're still 100%, so they were good. "Shine" was so awesome live. It's one of those songs you don't want to end. I've pinpointed that as the most recognizable first 1/2 second of any song from the 1990s.

Hootie and the Blowfish were awesome. I'd also seen them a few years ago and they were just as great this time as they were last time. A truly fun performance. They started off with their version of "I Go Blind," which I love. The last half hour was killer, they really cranked it up for the last bit.

But man, the people I was sitting next to, jeez Louise. It was a family with an eight-year-old kid. The kid wasn't bad, he was just being a kid, but the mom was obnoxious. Nothing worse than a middle-aged woman with alcohol in her system. The screaming like a banshee, the stumbling, it's ridiculous. I felt second-hand embarrassment.

Actually, the whole crowd was a lot older than I expected. I'm 34, and all three of those acts were relevant when I was sentient. But the crowd was old in general. Not Gen X old, but Boomer old. Who the heck was listening to Hootie and the Blowfish when they hit it big in 1994? Forty year olds? I had no idea. I thought they were more well-liked among all generations of the era.

Anyway, the performances were great, the crowd left something to be desired.

I hate alcohol, it makes people idiots.

Hootie goes back to 1986, and well before they topped the charts, they made a killing touring college campi, mostly in the South, and selling their music out of the back of the van.

A lot of stories in the mid-1990s began with, "I know I should hate Hootie, but they played this mixer at a frat house at Emory when I was visiting my boyfriend there in 1989 and we just felt so cool. Nobody ever came to play there."

I knew I should hate Hootie but couldn't resist the evil charms of "Hold My Hand"
