What makes a good state flag?

Illinois is following Minnesota as it is coming up with a new state flag. A commission has produced ten finalists.

Seems like the states are looking to move away from the old school, "seal on a bedsheet" design that pretty much looks the same from one state to the next.

https://www.ilsos.gov/special/IFC/10finalists.pdf

I didn't like the modern designs at first, but now I think the entry with the profile of Lincoln and the western side of the state is really kind of clever and is growing on me.

What do you guys think? Could you pick your existing state flag out of a crowd?

The Maryland flag is beloved by Marylanders and it is thematically incorporated into a lot of local designs in fashion and advertising.

But the flag is sort of a post-Civil War reconciliation gesture. The border state was split during the war and pro-Union Marylanders marched under the colors of the Calvert family while pro-Confederates marched under the colors of the Crossland family. So after the war, the Maryland General Assembly decided to mash two of each into a four-square flag to suggest we're all cool with each other now.

Maybe we are, but let's not pretend that we're cool with what you did, so ... I'd love to see the flag reconsidered, but I imagine that would be an uphill climb — though, hey, we got rid of our Confederate memorial statues.

I'm not sure what would make a timeless statement as a flag. Something that notes how we're at our best when we all pull together, or celebrates when we all have pulled together to advance a noble purpose, but I don't know what that looks like, and clearly, the bar for what is noble shifts over time.

I'm not crazy about any of them, but I guess I'd vote for 2752.

I don't really like the one with Lincoln's profile on the left in blue and the western border of Illinois in red on the right. I keep focusing on the white shape in the middle, which doesn't represent anything and is very prominent.

Relationship to Illinois: The students who worked on this flag are high
school students living in Illinois named Johnna and Spresalynn.

Explain the meaning behind your flag ... no, wait ... Explain the meaning behind the name Spresalynn: ...
I kid. Great flag, kids.

I don't know. 2246 really gives us some seventies groovy-ness. I almost want to add "HAVE A NICE DAY" in bubble text.

It also looks like the flag of an Asian Pacific Rim or island nation. A rising sun, waves on a green sea, stars on the oceanic horizon ... if you told me this was the flag of Maldives or Macao, I'd totally believe you. It feels like such a wonderful misfire that it gets my sympathy vote.

State flags kinda sucked, and they'll be banned by Feb25.

Most people in the Nutmeg State wouldn't recognize nutmeg if a bag of the ground spice hit them in the head (me included).
That's a toughie.
Well, we are the pizza (that's "Appiz" to you) capital of the world.
Maybe just a slice of Pepe's clam pie surrounded by drooling eaters.

3754 wins. The guy who just copied the existing state flag to save money deserves a nod too

Connecticut is hardly the pizza capital of the world.

Nor the clam capital...

(I was wondering how long it would take for someone to respond to that.)
It says it on the highway signs entering our state, so it must be true.
don't you believe everything the government tells you?

That's pretty sweet.

I'm not sure the inclusion of a corporate name like CITI would pass muster, unless they paid a lot of money, of course.

Also, no unisphere or other World's Fair structures? No airplanes? No Rockaway Beach?
