This and That - 2025

Post by Frayed Knot » Wed Jan 01, 2025 6:27 pm

If a movie or TV special is ever made about 'The Honeymooners', I think it should be required that actor Edward Norton play the role of Art Carney.
I mean it would be criminal to do it any other way, no?

What do Alfred Htichcock's first sound film, Blackmail, The Marx Brothers first motion picture, The Cocoanuts, The Gold Diggers of Broadway, Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury all have in common, among many other works?

Answer: they were all works released in 1929 and as such, they are now in the public domain as of today.

Gold Diggers is a celebrated film among pre-Code aficionados, though I think it's mostly lost to history. Every now and then, a few minutes worth of film resurfaces, but nobody's been able to assemble anything like a complete print.

I imagine that a big part of its appeal is based on it's inaccessibility.

i don't really know what that means when it comes to movies. What does it mean to me, the viewer at home?

Nothing to you as a viewer, but I think it means you can burn a copy of The Cocoanuts to DVDs and sell them legally instead of through the black market.

In the movie, Groucho Marx played a real estate developer named Hammer and Zeppo was his assistant Jamison and Margaret Dumont was Mrs. Potter. If you wanted, you could write and publish a book about the further adventures of Hammer and Jamison and Mrs. Potter. (Harpo and Chico played characters named Harpo and Chico, so I'm not sure how that would apply to them.)

There's probably more to it than that.

My Canadian baseball fan friend and his wife were supposed to go to New Orleans for New Year's Eve.
But their plane got delayed,
He likes to party, and says he was intending to go to Bourbon Street the night of that terrible attack.
He thanks the Air Canada maintenance crewman who fucked up something for saving his life.

Or at least spared him from witnessing some carnage.

My son was in New Orleans last week too. He returned during the day on December 31, so at least I didn't have to worry about him when I heard the news.

Just got a call from a customer named Howie Bedell.
I asked him if he was related to the ex- major leaguer and he said he was the guy.
He was amazed that someone remembered him (I was amazed, too, but I didn't tell him that).
He's 90 and is still involved in the game, part of a group that builds (and re-builds) baseball stadiums.

Walking the dog in the Safeway parking lot today, I spotted a lost one-cent piece. Somehow, despite my vision being a daily disappointment, I was able to tell even before bending over to claim it that it had the old-skool shafts of wheat on the back, rather than the Lincoln Memorial. On picking it up, I confirmed that it was indeed a 1944 wheat-tail penny, which, according to my quick Internet sleuthing, may be worth $10,000, or $0.02.

Quite a varied market for the old wheat pennies.
When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste

Sounds like some of the coins my brother and I found in dad’s desk.
Either we could both buy a private island, or put them in gumball machines.

I have a rather shiny 100-year-old Liberty Quarter. I've been
told it's worth thousands and I've seen them on eBay for a
couple of bucks.

In the end, it's like everything, it's only worth what someone
will fork over to you to buy it.

Yeah, but I could really use a private island about now.

And I could also use some gum, come to think of it.

It's all about condition with coins (similar to baseball cards) so two of the same coin c/would vary widely in value.

I've been working for a company that sells collectible coins for 18 years.
What usually sets the price of older coins is date, mint and condition.
Another factor is the quantity of that coin that was produced.
Coins are graded on a scale of 1 (awful) to 70 (perfect) and that grading is done by examining the coin under a microscope (or loupe) to detect wear and tear and amount of erosion.
If you think a coin may be worth a lot, you can look at the Official Red Book of US Coins (probably in the reference section of your library or under $20 from Amazon) to check it out. It has every US coin by date and mint and approximate costs. But those costs may not be up to date.
If you check and still think it might we worth a lot, wait for a coin show near you. Show it around, and DON'T jump at the first bid.

Jefferson Airplane had a different female singer for its debut album; and when Grace Slick joined she brought both " White Rabbit" and "Someone to Love" with her (written by her brother in law). I didn't know that.

I did.

Well, didya know Grace Slick was actually fucking that brother in law (Darby Slick, brother of her husband Jerry and member of the Great! Society?

I added to my post above. Whaddya expect? Everybody was fucking everybody back then. What a time. And against a backdrop of the greatest and most intelligent pop music ever made.

Ever watch The Wonder Years? Embryonic Journey is like the unofficial official background music to that TV show.

And here's the Mets/Grace Slick Jefferson Airplane connection. In Ken Burns' Baseball Documentary, Volunteers is the background music playing while the Mets celebrate their Miracle of '69.

_________

And then there was the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man, to which Surrealistic Pillow was practically the entire soundtrack to the movie and like a supporting character.

It's sad, but I have a feeling that OSU is going to beat Notre Dame in the college football championship game- badly.
They have too many long range scoring threats, and ND, with a running quarterback, has no quick way to fight back from a large deficit if they fall behind early.

I've worked for two companies headquartered in Ohio and met many OSU grads.
They left a very negative impression.
So, I always root against OSU.

Michael Vick was just named to the College Football Hall of Fame.
That made me remember one of the gross jokes that circulated about him a few years ago.
A guy wrote:
"We think it's cute when all of George Foreman's children are named George.
So, why do we get upset when all of Michael Vick's dogs are Sparky?'
He must have thought there were a bunch of people who would think that was funny.

Maybe this should be in the "Things People Post" thread. Just as absurd as MAGA posts.
