Lately, I’ve been into ___________

Lately I’ve been into Julian Lennon.

I’ve loved his music since Valotte, and though I haven’t followed him closely, I asked for and received his CD, Jude, for Christmas and I love it.

Very lush and layered. Favorite song so far is Lucky Ones.

Always have thought he was an adorable little boy, just a few years younger than I am. His voice doesn’t sound like a 60 year old, and I think his talent outdoes his dad, honestly.

Is "been having into ..." a Pennsylvania expression?
I've never heard that before.
Don't remember hearing Julian, but he has to have a better singing voice than his mom.

Oh nonono MFS…Julian’s mother was Cynthia, not Yoko.

And my stupid cell phone made that colloquialism up.
I fixed it!

His mom is the late Cynthia Lennon, who as far as I know, has never had a public singing career, or even much of a public profile, as her existence was largely hidden during the Beatlemania period.

Julian was a victim of Second Album Syndrome, as his first was such a breakthrough that his second was rushed to market before it was ready. Though it wasn't bad, it represented such a dropoff from the first that the public largely moved on. He became more of a British tabloid figure than a recording artist for a while, but his sporadic returns to recording have produced some definite gems. Though many of his best work has been overlooked, it'd be terrific if Jude finds a wide audience for him again.

I don’t see a TV thread so I’ll drop this here.

We are BBC nuts and recently have been watching one or two “Agatha Christie’s Hercule Pierot”s a day in between bedroom painting.

David Suchet as Hercule. Absolutely divine although they dumped three main characters halfway through the run. Still excellent though that was tres disappointing.

Never could get into her books but I like these.

Suchet played the role forever. The way these shows run in Britain — a "season" of 10 or so episodes (some of them film-length) and then a few years off — make it hard to sustain the cast.

I'm not a mystery fan, but my wife enjoyed these, and I liked the deco-era architecture and production design. She loved Suchet and what a cosmopolitan comfort-loving whiner his Poirot could be.

He was also a great baddie in Iron Eagle and Executive Decision.

Lately, I binged the entire 7 seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street. It was on NBC in the 90's but they kept moving it around on the schedule so I'd always miss episodes. Seeing it all in one shot was awesome. Took a while since it's 122 episodes but very worth it.

Is this just a thread for random stuff you've started doing lately?

Ice skating. I taught myself when I spent a semester in a French immersion program in Quebec City. That was 1987, when it was still cold in Quebec City (true fact: they've gone from 150 days a year where outdoor rinks are skatable without refrigeration down to 50), all we had to protest was Reagan, and I was a mere lad of 22.

Now, as you math whizzes have already figured out, I'm 60, which likely increases the cost of falling, as my tailbone is far less resilient. Knock on ice, I haven't fallen yet, and I'm starting to feel like I won't. We bought ourselves cheap pairs of skates and went out in Bryant Park a couple of weeks ago. It's free if you have skates, though advance reservations are required.

I split my time between Cleveland, NYC, and Montreal... Cleveland has a pretty nice rink not far from me and it actually has been a cold enough winter in Montreal that the outdoor rinks have stayed open.

My girlfriend, who grew up doing plenty of skating in northeast Ohio, is a hell of a lot better than me at it. But I'm catching up.

Strap a pillow to your butt. Things start getting harder to heal as you get older.
We want you healthy for Spring Training.

i find that i'm getting super-duper into anger and denial lately.

That aside, i've decided i'm going to use my disney+ subscription to backfill myself on as much xmen content as possible. because, well, i need something to do while i ice my knee nightly.

I've been into vintage mechanical pencils. They're clever little gadgets, they're often quite attractive, they feel nice to hold, they're affordable (if you don't think ten or twenty dollars for a pencil is ridiculous), and they're a piece of a different world that you can actually use. And I do get them to use, not to display. I write with gold-plated or ebonite pencils from the twenties, celluloid pencils from the thirties and forties, ring-top pencils that hung from watch chains, snub little pencils that rolled around in ladies' purses, advertising pencils with the names of funeral homes or dairy co-ops or streamlined trains, pencils with calendars or rollers on the end that measure inches and feet, Sheaffers and Parkers and Eversharps and Autopoints and Redipoints and Quickpoints and Ritepoints and Crosses; a Waterman, a Mabie Todd, an Esterbrook, a Durolite.

We're all a little nuts these days.

Pencils at $10-20 are a bargain as a collectable. A guy I knew from work had a sideline of buying and selling pens and I was astounded to learn that many of the classic ones went for well over $10,000.

Pencils going for $10,000? Shows how gullible people are. Much like Trump being re-elected.
