Snow day working

My campus is closed today because of the bitter cold, which means most of the faculty and staff get an off day. Not so much for me, which is fine. But the home Internet is having issues, and I've been using the hotspot in my phone. It lasts for a while then has to be reset when I get a call. So, I'm in a local coffee shop using its wifi and drinking too much coffee. Their music, played just a little too loudly, is a mix of disco, country, classic rock and something playing now that I can't classify other than bad. I think they are trying to discourage people from spending the day using their wifi.

Schools closed in southern Wisco. -13 regular temp this morning when I walked the dogs with a -25 windchill.

I don't plan on leaving the house much today.

I was planning on staying warm and cozy (I work from home) at home today.
Then I got a call saying the lab messed up my blood test, so I had to go get blood drawn so the results will be back before my Friday Doctor's appointment.

Currently a balmy 18 F here.

The nice thing about having a job where all I need is a laptop and an internet connection is that I can work from anywhere. The downside is that snow days don't exist.

I've been in the basement we rent in Queens since Sunday. I was supposed to get here Sunday evening, but changed the flight to early morning to get ahead of the storm.

Had a bit of a scare last night when power went out in Cleveland, where it was 3 degrees outside. I shut my water off when I leave for more than a day or two, but there is still a few feet of hard to get to pipe before the shut off valve, and I always worry about that area freezing and bursting. Fortunately, it only got down to 44 in the house before power was restored.

Our power went out late Saturday/early Sunday and was restored mid-afternoon Sunday - luckily before it got very cold.

I generally work in the office Tuesday-Thursday and at home Monday and Friday but I stayed home today (working) because of the cold (tho' I will be in tomorrow).

You can see your breath in the entrance hall and staircase at Chez Lunchmeat

I think we should all rent a bus and go hang out with ABNS
for a month. Unannounced! Wives love the pop in...

Best idea ever.

We're keeping the temp low and bundling. Our house just hemorrhages heat.

My job is getting everything cranked up twenty minutes before my wife's students arrive at the house, and give the children's parents the illusion of comfort.

No 2 hour delays here. People are pretty upset.

Tomorrow should be even worse.

Panama City, FL, where my brother and his wife spend their late winters is expecting several inches of snow so they stayed home for an extra week where it is merely frigid.

The family room where I work faces the sun. But when the sun goes down, the drop in warmth is very noticeable, even though the outside temperature may have only dropped 1 or 2 degrees.

Where is ABNS?

I've got an online friend who has been reduced to living out of her car in Greensboro. I've been trying to connect her with services, but I don't know the bureaucracy down there. Shortly before this snap, she was able to get a motel room for two weeks from a Catholic Charities agency. That runs out in a few days and I don't know that she's that much closer to securing a long-term place.

Wife is off for the second straight day - the charter school where she is employed is affiliated with the Syracuse City School District, which has cancelled classes the last two days due to temps too cold for the various kids who walk to school each day.

Fgirl is off anyway for winter Regents week.

We drove Fboy back to Oneonta for spring 2025 semester yesterday (Fgirl accompanied me in return for lunch at Subway). It was a beautiful sunny day for a drive (Oneonta is round trip about a four hour ride for us).
