Help me understand the love for MISERY. I get being bummed about being bounced from the playoffs, but the photo doesn't really show that. I'm not even sure what is going on there. The whole thing has a #lolmets element to it. What am I missing?

It's a unique looking cover. And although in this photo Lindor isn't mourning being bounced from the playoffs (he's actually reacting to having fouled a ball off his foot) the photo fits the headline and captures the mood of the day.

I went with Pete and think it's gonna beat the other finalists despite lacking a pun in the headline, it's really a shame.

I checked the box for Pete and The News also, but I'm getting the feeling that the enigmatic pose of Francisco Lindor is going to take MISERY all the way, and years from now, it will draw more viewers than most as it hangs in the winners gallery — with Lindor's contortions and it's elusive connection to the story getting it branded a obscuritanist modern minor masterpiece.
That is Lindor, right?

MISERY's photo is great and fills the page in a satisfying way, but the text layout really serves it, too. It's really uncluttered and minimal, except for the word "misery", which looks like it wants to crush Lindor.

Misery makes me very happy. I really thought a lurky turkey or two
was would sneak in and take Pete home here.

I don''t know how MISERY could be winning. It's not an
UPLIFTING cover. /rolls eyes a zillion times.
And how the hell could these photos ever have won the Pulitzer?
They're not UPLIFTING either, come to think of it. They should've jailed and tortured whoever took those downlifting photos. And also the people that decided to run them on front covers of newpapers. How would those covers then ever win cover derbys with such downlifting covers? We should photoshop Mickey Mouse and Snow White onto those photos.

Three of our seven previous winners have been "bad news" covers.
