Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
It was foretold.
The August 2022 PotM set is seminal, to use a favorite Gary Cohen word. A 1969 deGrom! A 1980 deGrom! (One guesses Jake exhausted the Seventies models pre-scapula.) A 1967 Diaz/Trumpet in the best tradition of METS MAULERS! Comfort zones have been exploded or at least expanded. Plus compelling evidence that Darin Ruf wasn’t always useless.
Like the Seaver statue, the Hodges plaque and Nos. 17 and 24 having their day, I don’t know I ever believed I’d live long enough to see any of this. What a year.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Brilliant!

And the Old Timer's Day more generally. Apart from any and all new history made this season, a terrific year for the institutionalization and enshrinement of established history.G-Fafif wrote: ↑Tue Sep 13, 2022 10:02 amIt was foretold.

I currently have saved on DVR:
NYM Old Timers Baseball
NYM Old Timers Pregame
He's Keith Hernandez
ESPN 30 for 30 (four episodes)
Over the weekend:
KB: What's all the Mets stuff saved on the DVR?
KC: Don't touch it, leave it be.
KB: The Once Upon a Time thing is a year old.
KC: Leave it alone if you want to see another year!
KB: Isn't this stuff online?
KC: I'm sure it is, so is Flea Market Flip and Storage Wars.
*silence followed* game, set, match...

Did Ruf's pitching mopup work actually go into his Bench Player of the Month totals?

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
Yes, the only 1970s year for which there hasn't yet been a deGrom card was 1977. Sometimes I reuse existing cards, but the ones with the long hair seem kind of dated now so I'm less likely to reuse them, so yes, I expanded the parameters a bit.
The Diaz/Trumpet card is the second time I've dipped into 1967, but the first time for Schaefer. The other time was when David Wright tied Ed Kranepool for all-time leader in base hits.
As you can see, there have been a lot of deGrom cards!
Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
That sounds like an executive decision was made!
Also, despite the seeming paradox, I kind of agree with it.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
No, no decision was made. It's the way the Schaefer software works. Other than creating the baseball cards and the end-of-month posts, everything it totally automated. To close out a game I click a button and the code does all the tallying. Bench points are given to any position player who earns points in a game in which he's not in the starting lineup. Reliever points are given to anyone, pitcher or not, who pitches in the game after the starter has exited.
I see a gap here... If Jacob deGrom were to pinch-hit a game-winning three-run homer, he wouldn't get bench points, although he should. But that's so unlikely and I'm not going to invest the time to fix it for a project that only about a half-dozen people participate in. If Schaefer took any real effort I wouldn't be doing it.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
It's just interesting in that players now have to be pre-declared either hitters or pitchers even if they do something else. MLB is acting like software. You're either a zero or a one.
I guess I need to root against the Mets acquiring Shohei Ohtani, because he'd blow up the Schaefer engine.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
I suppose I would have to classify him as a position player in the UMDB. It would allow him to earn points in both categories. But yeah, he would complicate things.

First-timers all! Love the Joely win and the Joely '72.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.
Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH, 2022
Gore also wins largely on the strength of one game.
The DH certainly takes away a chunk of opportunity for a player to shine off the bench, but with a platoon at DH, a platoon in right after Marte went down, and pinch-hitting-for-the-catcher opportunities, it's disappointing that somebody couldn't step up off the bench more than once a month.
The DH is for saps, anyway you slice it.
