Re: Baby it’s cold out there
Drove up to see our son at his new job in central Vermont. Snowed like crazy from around Troy, NY to his place in Chittenden, VT on Friday evening. Fortunately, we didn't have any real issues with the drive. However, the snow and wind knocked out his power on the night we arrived, so we slept in a house that had an inside temperature of 38 degrees when we went to bed. Vermont Power trucks showed up around 9:00 AM on Christmas Eve morning and got the power restored in pretty quick order. They put a guy up in a basket truck who took a long stick and whacked the transformer like he was trying to get candy form a pinata, then suddenly, we had power. We gave them a standing ovation from the large living room windows. The waved and then they were gone.

Lol 38 inside the house at night? That’s not good for water pipes!
By morning it must have been frosty!

It beat the 5 degrees and windy that was outside. It made for a memorable Christmas weekend that we will laugh about and remember for years to come.

That's funny. Never heard of transformer whacking!!The Hot Corner wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 8:06 pmThey put a guy up in a basket truck who took a long stick and whacked the transformer like he was trying to get candy form a pinata, then suddenly, we had power. Hope he was making time-and-a-half holiday pay for that trick.

That’s so…we’re so used to comfort and joy that we forget that a bit of discomfort is what makes memories! The Hot Corner wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 8:22 pm It beat the 5 degrees and windy that was outside. Maybe they were breaking ice free?

That was our best guess. It just looked funny for 3 vehicles and 4 workers to show up. Walk around and assemble tools for over 30 minutes, then a guy goes up in the lift and gives one of the transformers 2 solid whacks with a long pole. Then he signals to take him back down, because he is obviously done. We were just very thankful to have power (and heat) restored.

Re: Baby it’s cold out there
I've seen a guy reconnect a blown transformer*; it's like when a fuse blows in the box, it just needs to be re-set.
So they get out there with that long pole and simply flip that coil-looking device back into place. Maybe this one
needed ice-whacking off it as well but it's mainly just a case of reconnecting the bridge so that the 'lectricity starts
flowing again.
* a crow had flown directly into one and the short circuit let out a HUGE bang resulting in a local blackout!
