Yeah, Dionne's version is definitive, but you can't really fault anyone who prefers this. It arose from Aretha and her singers fooling around in the studio, and the folks behind the boards liked what they heard and quickly threw together a rhythm track for them to sing against. They always used their signature distinctive harmonic intervals, and it's not the sort of thing one might associate with Bacharach arrangements but it sure worked this time.

Aretha and Dionne supposedly had some animus through most of their careers and some have pointed to this encroachment on Dionne's repertoire as the genesis.

The tempo on Warwick's version always seemed a tad too fast.



btw, new-ish fact for me: Warwick's name was actually Warrick. A record company mis-spelling on an early single release effectively forced a permanent name change.
And in addition to the well-known Houston family connections, she's also listed as a cousin to Leontyne Price.

Question, if I was to purchase a decent record player for my son what are some good options? , And what speed are most newly printed records played at ?

Turntables have a WIDE variety of quality and prices. LPs are usually at 33 RPM with some at 45 RPM, but nearly all turntables can switch between those two speeds. Here are a couple of options:

Starter: Audio-Technica At-LP60X for $125ish

Next level: Fluance RT81 for $250ish

I have this: Pro-Ject T1 of $450ish

There are certainly more expensive turntables, but I find that those require astronomical amounts to be spent on the whole system (speakers, preamp, etc) in order to be worth the price. Even then, differences would only be heard by the most snobbish connoisseur.

I have that Fluance deck and these speakers (https://www.edifier.com/product-r1280t.html) and I've been very happy going on 6 years. Occasionally wish the speakers were a little bit louder but it's not been an issue for any sane person and my neighbors have all been happy with the max volume.

Over the years I've purchased 3 or 4 of those cute suitcase record players (~$50) for my nieces to play Taylor Swift or whatever, and they generally sound like caca, especially if they only have one speaker. The kids have not noticed, but your mileage may vary.

We got the Lunchpail a cerwin vega for like 150, the upgrade over the base model was Bluetooth. Good gift he actually uses it

Steve Mackey, the bass player from Pulp died at 56 after a long battle with illness. Aside from his work in Pulp, he had a pretty nice producing resume including M.I.A, Kelis, the Kills, Arcade Fire, and Florence and the Machine. I only saw Pulp once and they were fantastic. Here is a video from that show where I was on drugs.

You've heard "The Load-Out/Stay" 10,000 times. What you may not fully appreciate, though, is that a large chunk of the magic on that track is Lindley, playing the steel guitar solos and countermelodies, before stepping out and singing a falsetto chorus near the end.

Lindley's El Rayo X is one of the most fun albums.

As spritely as he seemed, Lindley's as responsible as anybody for summoning the haunted side of the California sound. Amazingly, he's the phantom fiddler on the Youngbloods' "Darkness Darkness."

Perhaps even more amazingly, he's the fiddler while Charlie Fucking Daniels is the producer.
