Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
For those saying Diaz wouldn't have been hurt in a postgame celebration in spring training, well obviously that's wholly true and I agree. But if you saw the actual celebration, it's apparent that the injury was a freak thing, not caused by a dog pile or something nefarious in the celebration. They were like kids doing little bunny hops and if his ACL or his achilles ruptured (please god no) doing that, then my dudes, that coulda happened climbing out of his car or walking up the steps or playing with hid kid.

Easier to know where I stand on things when Olbermann has hot take.
It feels extremely selfish (and a bit of a shit American POV) to decry players from different places for wanting to represent their countries and call it "meaningless". It may mean nothing to Keith fucking Olbermann, but it's a huge source of pride and means a lot to a lot of players.

It's not even really just his opinion I take issue with. I take issue with almost all of his adjectives and nouns.

"...split up teammates based on where their grandmothers got laid."
That's fucking great. I wish I wrote that before Keith did. That's a great line. Even if youse don't even agree with it.

Can't agree more, who is Keith or anyone to say what this should mean to players , very isolationist

Have no issue with players wanting to represent their country. It's just idiotic that they would hold this tournament before the season.
And I realize that there's no good time to have an injury that takes 8 months to heal, but at least you take out some of the risk if you have it in winter.

Well, players celebrate just like that in the Majors, too. I wonder if this Diaz incident will have the effect of tamping down those MLB end-of-game celebrations that often follow walk-off hits?
Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
The problem is that any basketball or soccer player who keeps themself in good shape during the offseason can play in an offseason tournament, but this probably isn't the case for pitchers who have to ramp up to pitch - and then cool off again and ramp up again for spring training. I'd think most MLB teams would completely nix their pitchers throwing competitive games November through February.Centerfield wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 2:17 pm Have no issue with players wanting to represent their country. I think the real answer would be an abbreviated tournament during a lengthened all-star break - only 16 teams qualify and they play Tuesday (round of 16), Wednesday (8), Friday (4), Saturday (Finals), during a Monday through Sunday all star break. the all star game would be on that off day on Thursday.
Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
Yes, you wrote that no team would allow any pitcher to do this, but they regularly do it already, in six or seven different fall and winter leagues.

Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
Perhaps Adam Ottavino should now remove himself from Team USA.
Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
how many MLB pitchers compete in those leagues? - the domestic winter leagues are entirely minor leaguers. the overseas leagues have free agents/recently retired types and maybe some hitters under MLB contract - but not usually pitchers.
Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
More than a few. Less than all. Certainly more than none.

Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
Why? To go participate in a different set of "exhibition" games instead? The only guarantee Adam Ottavino has to preventing an injury is don't play baseball.

Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
So he doesn't get caught in a dogpile if Team USA wins. So the Mets, the team that is paying his salary, can supervise his spring workouts rather than strangers who have different goals. He's something like the 6th RP on Team USA (he didn't pitch last night) so they won't miss him.
Re: WBC 2023--We'll Be Seeing You Later
I predict he won't get caught in a victorious-but-injurious dogpile.
Heck, I'm calling Draft Kings to bet on it.

Yeah, but dudes in the 80s just didn't train year round the way they do now. Guys were using March as a time to cut back on ciggies.
