I turned off hard mode, mid-word. It was going to force me to use the same letter in the same position. Is that new? I feel like the only requirement previously was that you had to keep using a guessed letter, even if you wanted to move it to the wrong spot? Do I have that right ?

No I think it’s gotta be in the same spot if you know that’s where it goes.

If I had gone with my first impulse today I would have had it in two, but I second-guessed myself so it ended up taking me three guesses.
According to WordleBot, my first guess eliminated all but five words.
"XXXXX is a strong opening guess. And it was extraordinarily lucky today. You've eliminated all but five of the words in my dictionary."

I missed the dumbest of birdie putts, where I had four letters and knew the fifth one, but because I turned off hard mode, it let me guess a different word that was missing the letter I already knew. Once again hard mode would have made this easier, somehow.

Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
So I still don't get this 'hard mode' stuff.
But aside from that, Tuesday's word, HURRY, was the first time I encountered a word that used the same letter more than once.
So I'm assuming that there's no way to tell that a letter you've already guessed and been told is correct (whether in the correct
slot or not) may also appear a second or even a third (GEESE) time. So while you can eliminate your rejected guesses from
further consideration players need to keep in mind that accepted guesses may have to be guessed again (and maybe again).

Nice birdie today. Streak at 72. If I get another 26 right in a row my percentage will go from a rounded up 98% to actual 98% (441 of 450).

IIRC hard mode forces you to use letters already reveled in subsequent attempts ( if you guessed R and O in your first guess you then can't go and use five new letters in guess two )
Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
Correct. I guess I hadn't realized prior to yesterday that in hard mode if you have a letter correctly identified in its place in the word, that you also have to keep it in that same slot on subsequent guesses. If I knew that prior to yesterday I then forgot it.
For April, someone else can keep score for April 1-18, or maybe set up a shared Google Sheet for people to log their scores in. Like real golf - keep your own score!

Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
Why would anyone want to exclude choices in subsequent guesses that have already been revealed as part of the answer?
I mean, I did that a couple times while first starting to play this game over the last ten days but that was just me being careless and sloppy.
If that's all it does it sounds less like 'Hard Mode' and more like 'We're not going to let you be an Idiot' mode.

Yeah, choosing words you know can't be it in order to put more letters in play feels like cheating to me. I never signed up for "hard" mode but I've never played it any other way.

Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
Oh I see now. It's considered harder because if you have two letters already identified as part of the solution then you can only test three new letters in the next guess as opposed to temporarily dumping those letters in order to be able to see five completely new ones before combining the 'hits' from the two different words into something hopefully closer to the correct answer.
I've never played 'hard mode' but it also hadn't occurred to me to go fishing like that for included letters either so it hasn't mattered so far during my brief (10 games) Wordle career.
btw, Wordle was created by a Welshman named Wardle.
