The other day we had KAYAK as the word. As usual, I took one or more guesses than I should have to figure out a word that had a non-Romance or Germanic origin, but ... I figured that the particular consonants and their placements would suggest it was from a Native American language, presumably from Western Canada. Inuit, I figured.

But I was right and wrong. The word is apparently borrowed from Greenlandic. Color me surprised that there is such a language, but that's what the language of Native peoples of Greenland is called. Not the Nordic Greenlanders, but the Native Americans of Greenland are apparently (generally speaking) ethnically Inuit too. That's a wide diaspora for a group to cover and retain a similar language.
