The Coronation

Did you watch it?
What did you think about it?
What do you think of the new king?

We watched it because we found it interesting.
After January 6th, it's refreshing to see a peaceful transfer of power.
If what they said is true, the new king seems to be a very decent person with modern ideas (protecting the environment, inclusion).

It's irrelevant to me. Seems kind of stupid in this day to have a king, but I suppose there is value in the tradition. Not for me tho

Oooooh, an ICT

Of course it's not really a transfer of power but a ceremony for a new figurehead, a long past symbol of power at best.

If I were English I tend to think I'd be one of those questioning the frightful expense of maintaining not just the royal figurehead but of the vast bureaucracy surrounding it all.

But I guess the counter argument is that they claim to get all that back and more via tourism and such. I mean, without the royal trappings, tourism to England would be reduced to those coming for the food and the weather.

I know, but I when we saw it wifey and I couldn't help comparing it to what happened on Jan. 6th.
Agent Orange will probably comment that his inauguration drew bigger crowds.

I'm skeptical of the tourism angle. If the British Monarchy would it be abolished, the Tower of london, Buckingham palace, and Windsor Castle would not all immediately evaporate. Versaille is still a tourist attraction and France hasn't had a monarchy since the 19th century.

I am as well. It's more the history of the monarchy, and all the buildings that go with it, that people are interested in than it is the present date royals ... although if you read the tabloids even us Americans are obsessed over Will and Kate and Harry and Megan (and Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice).

I remember this type of discussion coming up years ago on the ABC Sunday morning news show back when David Brinkley was hosting. Cokie Roberts was making the case for a continuation of the romance of the royal story at which point George Will countered with, "Are they running a country over there or a theme park?"

Except that there were sizable numbers anti-monarchy protesters at today's events resulting in dozens of arrests, so not completely dissimilar.
Not sure if any of that was shown on TV but, even if hidden from view, doesn't mean it didn't exist.

I didn't see the protests but read about them afterwards.
I saw a similar question on the baseball site I frequent that has many Canadian members.
Not many watched it and several were less than complimentary.

You'd have to invent something for me to care about less than the royal family.

Ah, the American royal family. Just as useless and just as much media coverage.

I enjoy reading about/ watching royals. They don’t even have to be the Windsors. Maybe it’s the little girl in me.
That pomp and lifestyle just because you were born to it is kinda fascinating.
And in the old days they’d do all sorts of devious things for it.

No I didn’t watch it because it was too early to get up but my next door neighbor said he saw a little because his little daughter was up early sick and Mom watched it after the fact on Cspan.

We did, however, faithfully watch the Kentucky Derby last night.

And the Kardasians suck eggs.

I'm going to say the tourism wanes without the running soap opera.

Didn't watch a minute. The Royal Family is an anachronism that needs to slim down seriously. And if they don't do it, someone's eventually going to do it for them.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

First I hear about a trimmed down monarchy starting with a trimmed down coronation.
Then I hear that Tom Cruise and Katy Perry were there.

The last coronation that got my attention is when Prince went down to Alphabet Street to crown the first girl he would meet.
