Have I Got a Story for You, 2023
A thread for long-form feature-type journalism articles you've read, found engaging, and would like to share.
The $1 million shot that changed sports contests forever
This ESPN article revisits the story of the guy who became an overnight sensation thirty years ago, winning a (supposedly) million-dollar payday by chucking a shot from the opposite free throw line into the hoop, a promotion at halftime of a Bulls game, back when the sports-world seemingly revolved around Bulls games.
I like that, from that illustration, you kind of know from the numbers and hairstyles and facial hair which Bulls figures the artist is trying to draw, but none of them really look anything like who they are supposed to.
You May Know Me from Such Roles as Terrorist #4
This article — a profile of Arab-American actors torn between constantly being asked to play terrorists or not working at all while watching some other dark-skinned guy do it — is from eight years ago, but I found it when I spotted a stage actor I used to know back in the nineties blowing shit up in a crappy action movie I stumbled over.
The man who walked around the world: Tom Turcich on his seven-year search for the meaning of life
A sheltered New Jersey teenager loses his friend, gets lost in teen angst, and vows he will walk the world in search of answers. His family treats it as a stupid teen idea, but starting ten years later, he incredibly does just that.

I stumbled across the story about the kid who walked around the world. I envy him for his experiences.

I had read that back at the time it was published. "I would do anything for love, but I won't continue performing while drunken, rustic eejits keep throwing shit at me."

They must have learned from Richard Widmark:

I think parent company should have kept MTV News and canceled MTV rather than the other way around.
But that's just me.

Carpoff was a paunchy man with blue eyes and apple cheeks—a “big chipmunk,” as a colleague called him—who gulped rather than spit his chewing tobacco and spent Sundays watching NASCAR.

The takeaway — and we should get this by now — is that designing the tax code to forward policy initiatives almost always fails to advance the broader national interests they are aiming at, and instead privileges companies with accesss the fancy-pants law and accounting firms that can exploit these tax credits.

I found it to be a compelling read. I think my post-Madoff legacy as a Mets fan is an endless fascination with anyone who makes money in a Ponzi scheme.Edgy MD wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 2:33 pm The takeaway — and we should get this by now — is that designing the tax code to forward policy initiatives almost always fails to advance the broader national interests they are aiming at, and instead privileges companies with accesss the fancy-pants law and accounting firms that can exploit these tax credits.
