Well, a bogey would be a five.
Frayed Knot originally suggested that a turn that fails in six guesses is not only a seven, but to add a stroke for each additional letter (beyond one) we fail to get.
I was agreeable to that, because the rule would certainly never apply to me.

Yeah, I meant misses, not bogeys, but my understanding was that anyone who didn't solve the puzzle just took a 7. That seems less drastic to me personally.Edgy MD wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 10:56 pm Well, a bogey would be a five.

I suggested both versions, at first saying that a miss would be scored a seven before later tacking on the idea that you could also score 8's, 9's or 10's (or even an 11 for a complete whiff?!?)
by adding a stroke for each additional unfilled slot. I'm pretty sure that's as far as it got and no discussion ever took place over which was preferable.

In the discussion in my head, I agreed with your second notion, but I'm happy to accept my seven.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 9:06 amI suggested both versions, at first saying that a miss would be scored a seven before later tacking on the idea that you could also score 8's, 9's or 10's (or even an 11 for a complete whiff?!?)

In the meantime, after two holes, I still have to stand on my toes to even see last place.

I'm fine with either (although kinda like the lurking possibility of a blow-up score from the Wordle equivalent of dousing your ball in the creek) but the specifics should be agreed to ahead of time. I was just throwing out suggestions to a game I had yet to play at that point.
btw, I've added a cumulative score line to FMan's spreadsheet which will show us which words were easier or harder for our pea brains to decipher. Once the entire round is over it'll then identify which 'holes' were really more like Par 5s or Par 3s. A typical golf course has four of each to go with ten par fours.
And then there's also an average score per hole so individual players can more easily assess whether they gained or lost ground to the field that day.
These will automatically tabulate although will require that all scores be entered in order to be correct.
