Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
Let's discuss strategy here...
Let's say that after two guesses, I have this:
S H O R E
The solution could be SCORE, SNORE, SPORE, STORE, or SWORE. Five possible choices, but only four remaining guesses. Each guess will be hit or miss. None of these choices, if wrong, will give me any helpful clues, other than eliminating that particular word.
So what do I do? Run through my four favorite guesses and hope it's not the one I didn't choose?
Or do I try to figure out which letter I need from among C, N, P, T, and W?
I can enter a word like INEPT or PECAN which I know will be wrong, thereby losing my chance for a score of 3. But if one of the three consonants in PECAN lights up green, I'm guaranteed to solve in four. And if it doesn't, my fourth guess can be STORE and my fifth, if necessary, can be SWORE. So I know at worst I'll get a 5.
Do you go for the gusto and hope for a 3, risking a loss? Or do you play it safe and settle for a sure 4 or 5?

Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
this all comes down to whether or not you're doing "hard mode" - either officially or unofficially.
if you're doing hard mode, you're bound by rule and/or honor to go through your list and hope to not roll snake-eyes.
if not, try pecan.
of course, since i always start out with C L O M P i very rarely find myself in the situation where i have either most or all of the letters by my second guess, and also kinda don't often have too many times where i'm picking through a bunch of letters to make the right word. i pick off the weird letters first. and my second guess usually tries to pick off the remaining weird letters. the thought being that there are fewer words that use the odder letters in the right places, so i neck down to only a few possibilities.
results indicate that my strategy kinda sucks for competitive wordle golf, mind you, but my overall percentage is damned solid.

I've been unintentionally playing hard mode. Either way I'm clearly not ready for the big leagues.

Re: Wordling in 2023 (split from "The More or Less of Whatnot Thread 2023")
I've never switched to 'Hard Mode' (never even looked in to how) but I think there was only one time where I tried a completely different word so as to suss out multiple letters not already guessed (and that wasn't on a 'tournament' day) so I don't normally employ that strategy even when I can.
That said, I almost resorted to it today. After three guesses I stalled, not because I was weighing which word to try next but that I literally couldn't think of a legit word that included all I knew at that point to be true. Not a single one!
So I did the same thing I did last time thus happened, put it down and came back an hour or so later with an uncluttered head and almost instantly saw the path I couldn't see earlier. The cause was that I still have trouble remembering that correct letters may be used more than once which, once acknowledged, opened up new possibilities.
On another strategy note: I've yet to see a word that got to five letters by tacking on a plural S. Now I'm still just 80+ games into my Wordle career here so, for you more veteran players, does there seem to be an unwritten rule (or even a stated one) where they're not going to use plural nouns or have they shown that they will and I just merely haven't seen one yet.

I've noticed that too. I've played over 500 times and never saw a word like. FROGS or DOORS or HAWKS.

If I could find a link and then scan through 700+ answers, then, yes.
But that still wouldn't answer the question as to whether they've stated they won't or simply haven't to date leaving us having to guard against the possibility that they might.

I also never switched to “hard” but I’ve never played it any other way. When the NYT took over from the guy who developed the game it was mentioned in the article that there are no plurals.

There is a site where all previous Wordles are shown, it's here.
It's a spoiler free site, too, they won't post today's answer until tomorrow.
The NY Times announced at some point in the past that they would not use simple plurals as Wordles, but that you might see an atypically spelled one (GEESE, FUNGI), and that of course you can use plurals as guesses to help you.
I play in hard mode but it's actually possible, mid-Wordle, to switch out of hard mode and make a guess that doesn't include letters already placed.
