I rallied to a seven.

I feel like we'd have more effective chatter in this thread (and the Wordle one) if we allowed ourselves to reveal our guesses and agreed not to visit the thread until we've played.

I was surprised I got 7 with nothing but AL teams.

Derek Lowe for Bos/Tex was .04%! Was surprised that Randy Johnson was only something like 37% for 200+ Ks. Still cannot think of a Ranger pitcher with 200 Ks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: I started typing Nolan Ryan and then went "Nah, he was an Astro, not a Ranger." Brain=mashed potatoes

Ironically, I burned a guess thinking that Clemens had pitched for both Boston and Texas. I think I was conflating the Rangers and Astros.

Today I burned two guesses for the Royals 200K season. Bret Saberhagen and David Cone both proved to be wrong. So I went with Dennis Leonard, because I remembered a Sporting News cover from almost fifty years ago that called him "HILL WIZARD". My other wrong guess was Rico Carty as a Royal and an Indian.

Royals/Red Sox: Bret Saberhagen 2%
Royals/Guardians: --
Royals 200k: Dennis Leonard 1%
Mariners/Red Sox: --
Mariners/Indians: Gaylord Perry 0.6%
Mariners 200k: Felix Hernandez 60%
Rangers/Red Sox: Fergie Jenkins 0.5%
Rangers/Guardians: --
Rangers 200k: Nolan Ryan 82%

4 for 9 today. I figured I had a shot at respectability since I follow the Guardians in a half baked way, but the only one I came up with was Mike Hargrove, Guardian and Ranger.

This was something I was wondering about. David Cone was a Royal, and David Cone did have a 200K season. So I thought it would be correct to put him in the grid as someone who was both a Royal and who had a 200K season. But since he didn't have any 200K seasons for the Royals, apparently it's considered an incorrect guess.

This only counts for objective milestones. I put Hank Aaron for the Milwaukee Brewers Hall of Famer a couple of days ago and it was considered correct, although he certainly didn't go in with a Brewers cap.

I'm guessing that for awards like MVP and Rookie of the Year, then, you have to pick the team for which the player won the award; picking Eddie Murray as a Met and an ROY won't work.

Correct. If the category is a single-season accomplishment, it must have been done as a member of the corresponding team to be deemed a correct answer. Not just awards, but also single-season statistical milestones, like 30 HR's in a season or 200 K's in a season.

OE: I didn't make that mistake with Cone. I thought Cone had a 200K season as a Royal.

I thought Coney was a 200K guy with the Royals too. Fortunately, I needed him as my Royalsock, so I used him there.

Unfortunately, I wrongly guessed Saberhagen (also a Royalsock) as my false guess before (duh) keying in on Greinke.

Here are the most popular correct answers for each box in this puzzle:

Royals/Red Sox: Andrew Benitendi -- (50%)
Royals/Cleveland: Carlos Santana -- (50%)
Royals 200k: Zach Greinke -- (97%)
Mariners/Red Sox: James Paxton -- (39%)
Mariners/Cleveland: Carlos Santana -- (23%)
Mariners 200k: Felix Hernandez -- (58%)
Rangers/Red Sox: Nathan Eovaldi -- (28%)
Rangers/Cleveland: Corey Kluber -- (26%)
Rangers 200k: Nolan Ryan -- (87%)

The Royals/Cleveland box was the toughest to solve -- only 53% of players had a correct answer for it.

I thought I had a shot today, then whiffed on my first guess.

Immaculate Grid 86 7/9:

⬜️⬜️🟩
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩

O’s/a’s: I was thinking Miguel tejada and my brain gave me Melvin mora.
A’s/twins: I could t quite pull terry steinbach out of the deepest recesses of my brain and stumbled with Ted Lilly, who seems like he should’ve been a twins pitcher.
Rickey finished off the a’s row.
Robbie alomar (2%) Dave Winfield (9%) and Gwynn filled my padres obligation. Frank Robinson (23%) was my oriole masher.

Hopefully I do better next time.

I got everything but A's/Twins. (I guessed Rico Carty; second time he's let me down. I'll have to look at his BBRef page so I'll be better informed!)

Immaculate Grid 87 8/9:

🟩⬜️🟩

Eight out of nine. One of the cells stumped me to the point that I didn't even bother to take a guess. The expansion teams are gonna be my weakness in this game. Oh, and I took a gamble on Rusty Staub and it turns out that Expos are accepted for the Nats logo boxes --- as it should be.

Angels/Nats: Tim Foli (0.06%)
Angels/Marlins: ?
Angels/20W season: Dean Chance (0.8%)
Cubs/Nats: Larry Biitner (0.009%) <-------- That's three digits to the right of the decimal point!
Cubs/Marlins: Moises Alou (7%)
Cubs/20W season: Fergie Jenkins (21%)
Mets/Nats: Rusty Staub (0.2%)

One of these turns I'll get all 9. For the second time this week my lack of Anaheim Angels knowledge cost me. (OE: Maybe the other time it was a different AL team and not the Angels. I really don't know the current AL rosters).

Immaculate Grid 87 8/9:

I like to work in Mets, and lots of Metly content today! Gary Carter, Al Leiter, Tom Seaver, Damion Easley, Ellis Valentine -- and Steve Renko, who played for the Mets in the minors and was in every pack of 1973 Topps cards I opened.

Grid 87: 7-9 got all of the 20 game winners, and was surprised that it allowed Andrea Dawson for Nats/Cubs.

Got rare with Todd Zeile as the Cub-Marlin
