Re: Immaculate Grid
I'm still playing, but I haven't been posting my scores because I still have a few small slivers of pride left.
I also went 0 for 3 on the Rays, but I did manage to pull Steve Avery out of my bum as a Red Brave and scored a 5 this morning.
Even though I know it will break my heart, I keep watching the clock to see if it's 11:30 yet.

Didn't realize there was a second puzzle coming out today but I just got an 8 on it.
Seemed easier than previous versions.

Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Ugh, I was so close, I have been wrongly guessing Octavio Dotel twice per week and this was the time I should have pulled the trigger on him and did not.

Re: Immaculate Grid
Thank you Baseball-Reference for including a bunch of National League teams in their debut grid, along with the Yankees, who are, of course, memorable for all the wrong reasons, but memorable nonetheless.
Also, 200 hits is a tricky metric. Two hundred hits isn't usually the province of great hitters, but very good hitters, or possibly good hitters having very good-to-great seasons. Great hitters don't typically get enough strikes or chase enough balls to get to 200.
Rarity Score: 68
I was close to putting Juan Samuel or Richie Ashburn in as my 200-hit Phil, but played it safe with Rollins — rightly so in the case of Samuel, as it turns out, but Ashburn pulled it off three times.

Re: Immaculate Grid
Good analysis on the 200 hit club. I almost went with Duke Snider over Garvey but then remembered that Garvey was known for 200 hit seasons. Wanna know why Garvey had so many of them? Because he never fucking walked. Not so hot OBPs.
And the Dook? Turns out the most hits he had in a season was 199. Twice. And one 198 hit season.

Re: Immaculate Grid
The Mets have been around just as long as the Astros, yet almost twice as many Mets played for the Dodgers compared to Astros.
When I used to post those baseball card threads, the Dodgers threads were the largest of all teams.

The Mets have been around just as long as the Astros, yet almost twice as many Mets played for the Dodgers compared to AstrosProbably because the infant Mets acquired a lot of former Brooklyn Dodgers to capture the fan base? Or because the Dodgers and Astros were NL West competitors and intra-division deals are few and far between?

Accordingly to baseball-reference, 21 of the 162 Mets who were at one point a dodger played for the Mets in the 1960's as compared to 141 who played for the Mets in the 5+ decades since. So maybe there is something about free agency that makes that figure look not as impressive as we'd have expected. Or maybe 162 since 1962 is pretty normal overlap and it is just the Dodgers/Astros overlap that is light because of the shared division.
Re: Immaculate Grid
a warning for those of you trying to hit the lowest possible % guys, they changed the rules - in order to qualify for a rate stat (BA, ERA, etc) the player needs to have qualified that season. so no more ".300 hitter" pitchers who went 1 for 3.
Re: Immaculate Grid
new grid up. oof.
I learned tonight that neither Ken Griffey jr. nor Alex Rodriguez were the ROY for Seattle. Then I hastily typed in The Big Unit before recalling he pitched for the Expos. Then I closed the browser window.

I had to settle for a six today. I whiffed twice on the Mariners Rookie of the Year, picking Alex Rodriguez and then Mark Langston before settling on Alvin Davis.
