It depends. With people being able to broadcast themselves so easily, the idea of "the truth" may be lost forever.

These new charges are being filed in Federal Court in Washington DC, I'm guessing to take the control of the proceedings out of the hands of Florida District Judge Eileen Cannon, who has ruled favorably for defendant Donald in the documents case.

These charges are separate from the charges in her court and would be heard in a court presided over by a Judge in a different district.

Yes. But how would that take the Florida case out of the hands of Judge Cannon?

No, not the case already in her court. They will stay in her court. I meant these new charges can move along even if she choses to delay hers. I'm not a Lawyer, so I wasn't sure how to convey that.

The thing about so many of his misdeeds is that the moral transgression is far clearer than the legal one.

I don't like having to count on the court to rebuke him when we don't have the heart to firmly do so as a society.

Well, I have a lot more influence on the latter — and as I wrote, his disgrace is far clearer on plain-to-the-naked-eye moral grounds — and I feel like I'm failing.

Defendant Donald is using the Ray Lewis defense strategy:
Crimes were committed and he "just happened to be there."

The lawsuit of Michael Cohen VS Defendant Donald over unpaid services, scheduled to begin next week has been settled out of court.
I hope part of the deal doesn't prevent Cohen from testifying against him in other legal matters and he'l be clamming up.

Usual "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer here, but I don't think you can include an agreement not to testify in a different civil or criminal case as part of a settlement. Subpoenas are subpoenas.

This isn't.

Trump Threatens Republicans Who Don’t Help Him Exact Vengeance

Casting Republicans as meek, former President Donald J. Trump said members of his party should pursue investigations against Democrats — or risk losing their seats.

Excerpt:
Former President Donald J. Trump lashed out at Republicans in Congress while campaigning in Pennsylvania on Saturday, threatening members of his party who do not share his appetite for pursuing corruption investigations against President Biden and his family — and for retribution.

In a litany of grievances about his deepening legal woes and the direction of the country, the twice-indicted former president cast G.O.P. holdouts as meek during a rally in Erie, Pa., criticizing their response to what he described as politically motivated prosecutions against him.

[***]

And then Mr. Trump, the overwhelming front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, put party members on notice.

“Any Republican that doesn’t act on Democratic fraud should be immediately primaried,” said Mr. Trump, to the roaring approval of several thousand supporters at the Erie Insurance Arena.

If Trump, god forbid, gets elected, the second term will be 100% about vengeance. Everyone who wronged him, Republican or Democrat, sports figure, internet influencer, Vlodomyr Zelinskyy or just plain old person, will feel his wrath.

The DOJ will be ordered to find a reason to prosecute Joe Biden. And the Kim Reynolds of the world will be quaking in their boots. Republicans complain about 'weaponizing government', well you ain't seen nothing yet. Vengeance and settling scores will be Job 1, actual governing will be pretty far down the list.

I have a question

Would he be allowed to have two terms in a row after missing a term?

No, he won't.

Assuming, of course, that the Constitution remains in effect.

Curious. How would Trump defy the US Constitution to essentially create a dictatorship for himself? I've given this a tiny, little bit of thought after you posted and now believe that if he's re-elected, he will no doubt, try to extend his four-year term.

I'm still not clear on how Michael Bloomberg managed to defy the term limits for New York City mayors.

I guess Trump would have to have the cooperation of the military. Or use his emergency powers to suspend laws. Probably both. Maybe some crazy off the wall SCOTUS ruling(s). He'll install cronies and sycophants in the military leadership, for sure. And everywhere else.

Term limits for the New York mayor wasn't a constitutional matter, but merely a city law, and the City Council voted in a new act to extend the limit to three terms, and Mayor Bloomberg signed it into law.

But was it for Bloomberg only? Wasn't deBlasio term limited? Or did he just decide not to run for a third term?

two years after they raised the limits without a vote, 2010 referendum lowered it back to two terms. the voters were like "nah, we're good..."

After Paying Lawyers, Trump’s PAC Is Nearly Broke

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/31/us/p ... iling.html

I'm extremely skeptical that it all went to the lawyers. If there's a way for the scumbag psychopath to siphon off those PAC funds for his personal use -- and I don't mean legal fees personal use, I mean lobster and steak and stuffing the money in his mattresses personal use -- you can bet your life that that's what this fucking monster did.

Defendant Donald was just indicted again.
No details yet.
