FWIW, when Segna took to his socials to field options for his Met number, he said #48 was off the table.

I’d imagine it was taken by fans at the time to be Segna being aware and/or being appreciative of deGrom’s legacy with the franchise/MLB more than anything.

But, it hasn’t been issued yet this season 🤔

Certainly a sign that #48 probably is in line for a retirement ceremony down the road.

Retired numbers should be strictly limited to individuals who make the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Met. You could maybe make an exception for a beloved player who played an entire career with the team.

Not that I think any Mets numbers should be retired other than 14, 24, 31, 37, and 41. 24 because Willie Mays is Willie Mays even if he wasn't much of a Met. Maybe 17 because it's about sentimentality and Keith gets extra love because of his time in the booth.

And perhaps 5. Who didn't love Tsuyoshi Shinjo?

And, sure, 42 deserves the MLB-wide retirement.

I see no need to do this. Gooden screwed the Mets repeatedly by wasting his talent on a variety of recreational drugs. Strawberry left for more money.

Straw has at least turned his life around. Gooden is still figuring it out, which is not a good look at 58.

Who's next? Al Leiter? I'd rather have the numbers in rotation.

I always appreciated the restraint the Mets showed when it came to retiring numbers. That's obviously gone out the window, but I'm sixty years old and beyond caring too much about such things.
