Guess that Met

Post by Cowtipper » Mon Nov 06, 2023 9:52 am

Post a poem, post a picture, post a description, post a trivia question—but the goal is to give a hint—in some form—then have your fellow Mets fans Guess that Met!

Here's a few to get us started (I originally wrote these when I was a teenager so bear with me):

1. I was drafted by Boston in '92
And as a minor leaguer I did fine
Time went by and before I knew
I was a rookie at 29

Who am I?

2. I was originally drafted by the A’s
But for them I would never play
Once I threw nine wild pitches in 76 frames
But the next year I threw none in 27 games
My career as a Met was not that great
The games I played for them totaled eight
As a batter I had 10 career hits
And my Mets ERA was 7.36.

3. Many disliked me when I got traded
I came to the Mets before they were hated
I played 3rd Base in the 70s
It was anything but heavenly
Guess my name
to claim
your fame

4. I played for 2 ML teams prior to the Mets

I played for 4 ML teams after the Mets

I came to bat 100 times & struck out 42 times.

I even batted in the 1, 2 & 5 spots despite my inability to get wood.

Who am I?

5. I came with another player in a deal from an out of division team.

We both played big roles in that 1st great season we spent in orange & blue.

I did my best to be a 'rock' for the team

Who am I?

Running tally of who guessed correctly:

Edgy MD: 3
MFS62: 2
stevejrogers: 2
Benjamin Grimm: 1
DocTee: 1
Johnny Lunchbucket: 1

Number 5 is clearly George Stone, who came to the Mets from Atlanta when Atlanta was an out-of-division team.

Either that, or it's Fred Flintstone.

Some of the entries in our old song parody contests could be re-posted here because they didn't mention the player's name.

Two news ones; I'll roll the old ones over until they're answered.

1. I wore the uni, but I can't say with pride,
for the team was so bad
in the off season I died.

Number one sounds like Hall-of-Famer and original Mets coach Rogers Hornsby, but could probably be referring to a few others.

Rogers Hornsby is correct, though Red Kress would also work. I'll assume DocTee meant Rich Becker for #5, because that is correct as well. I've added hints to the two from the original post that haven't been updated yet.

Ron Taylor is correct!

1. This was originally posted in 2008. I kept it the same, but he might or might not have added more teams to his resume after this was posted:

Debuted as a Met in 1985 and a Met All-Star…not HoJo since he has two rings…neither Augie nor Nails as they never made an ASG as Mets, and Augie has a second ring…

Oh…right…batmags’ favorite

After going silent for a week (it's busy season at work), I return.

Ryan Church is correct!

I'm 99% sure steverogers got the other one, but I need him to spell it out a bit more...

While we wait:

1. I was drafted by Boston in '92
And as a minor leaguer I did fine
Time went by and before I knew
I was a rookie at 29

Hint: Debuted with the Mets in 2003.
Hint: Was a catcher.
Hint: He was Italian, but he was no Piazza.
Hint: Had all of 2 at-bats with the Mets

Who am I?

Hint: Debuted with the Mets in 1973.
Hint: Died in 2019.
Hint: He wore both Nolan Ryan's number at one point...and also Gary Gentry's.
Hint: His only other big league club was the Expos.

Who am I?

3. I played some ball with the Miners of Mat-Su
And I schooled at the College of Clark and Lew
I was drafted by the Royals, but ain't it just my luck
I was traded to the Mets for a guy named Tuck
I played only two games in a Mets uniform
And you can't really say I took the stage by storm
I gave up eight hits in my big league debut
And I walked three batters in the five innings I threw

Who am I?

Hint: Later sent as the player to be named later in the deal for Juan Samuel.

4. I was a Mets pitcher for just a single year
But I achieved a feat that is really quite queer
Although what I did was pitching, it did not involve that
Rather it involved hitting the ball with the bat
I had a single career appearance at the plate
And what I did with the stick was really quite great
I hit that ball well and it was off to the races
When all was said and done I got three total bases

Who am I?

5. I spent two seasons in orange and blue.
but also played for 5 other teams too.
Despite grand expectations, I never really hit a ton.
so I spent a half a decade in "the Land of the Rising Sun."

Who am I?

Well done on two lesser-known Mets, DePastino and Edens are correct. This'll be the last batch I post today. Some rollovers and two new ones.

Hint: Debuted with the Mets in 1973.
Hint: Died in 2019.
Hint: He wore both Nolan Ryan's number at one point...and also Gary Gentry's.
Hint: His only other big league club was the Expos.
Hint: Pitched from 1970 to 1974.

Who am I?

Hint: Pitched for the Mets in 2000.

Who am I?

3. This one will "bug" you until you get it...what Met had a lifetime average of 1.000 on 2-for-2, not just 1-for-1?

Hint: Pitched for the Mets in 2003.
Hint: Made 2 appearances, both starts; went 0-2.

4. Only three players in MLB history share [this] last name and all three played for the Mets at some point in their careers. Name the three players.

Hint: All three were All-Stars.
Hint: One is in the Hall of Fame.

5. With my original team I finished my career,
and when I was with the Mets it was all too clear
three wins were a charm
but 7 losses caused harm.
