Guess that Met
Re: Guess that Met
It was in fact Roberto Petagine. I know Tom O'Malley also pretty closely fit the description, but he wasn't a first baseman/outfielder.
1. I was originally drafted by the A’s
But for them I would never play
Once I threw nine wild pitches in 76 frames
But the next year I threw none in 27 games
My career as a Met was not that great
The games I played for them totaled eight
As a batter I had 10 career hits
And my Mets ERA was 7.36.
Hint: Debuted with the Mets in 1973.
Hint: Died in 2019.
Hint: He wore both Nolan Ryan's number at one point...and also Gary Gentry's.
Hint: His only other big league club was the Expos.
Hint: Pitched from 1970 to 1974.
Hint:
Hint: Player initials are J. S.
Hint: His first name was John
Who am I?
2. This one will "bug" you until you get it...what Met had a lifetime average of 1.000 on 2-for-2, not just 1-for-1?
Hint: Pitched fort the Mets in 2003.
Hint: Made 2 appearances, both starts; went 0-2.
Hint: Mets 20th round pick in 1997.

three wins were a charm
but 7 losses caused harm.

Surname has to be Alomar
Re: Guess that Met
Alomar (Sandy, Sandy, Roberto) is correct! Franco used to work (Matt, John, Julio), as well, until a few years ago. I've replaced the Alomar question with a new one. Question #1 has been hanging around for a long time, so I gave a (hopefully) gimme hint that should make it a lot easier.

Hints provided.
Re: Guess that Met
The most recent number five certainly looks like Jeff McKnight, but McKnight also played for the Mets in 1989, and the poem about number five seems to refer to a pitcher.
I think I'm not following when a number is being reused for a new guy.
I think I'm not following when a number is being reused for a new guy.
Re: Guess that Met
It is Jeff McKnight, I totally glanced over the fact he played for the club in 1989, as well. Well done. Every time a guy is guessed correctly, I just replace him with a new question/poem/picture. Sometimes I start a new post with the updated questions, but if multiple questions are answered in the same day, I just update the previous post, so as not to clutter this thread too much. So ignore the earlier posts in the thread, the most recent one is the one to look at for the most up-to-date questions—the numbers 1-through-5 are constantly evolving.
(For Internet archivists who stumble on this thread 1,000 years from now an wonder what is going on, here are a few questions that were answered and then replaced, being edited out of earlier posts and lost to the ether forever (though technically they still exist in post form earlier in this thread, for the most part):
I spent two seasons in orange and blue.
but also played for 5 other teams too.
Despite grand expectations, I never really hit a ton.
so I spent a half a decade in "the Land of the Rising Sun."

I was a Mets pitcher for just a single year
But I achieved a feat that is really quite queer
Although what I did was pitching, it did not involve that
Rather it involved hitting the ball with the bat
I had a single career appearance at the plate
And what I did with the stick was really quite great
I hit that ball well and it was off to the races
When all was said and done I got three total bases
Hint: Pitched for the Mets in 2000.

Number one above is the is the acclaimed Jason Roach, who started his career as a third-baseman and hit pretty well, but switched to pitching believing it was a quicker route to the big leagues, while shortsighted brass should've let him do both.

Re: Guess that Met
Hey! It's not just "some other" forum, it's my other baseball home, and it's not from some random thread, it's a thread I lovingly started 15 years ago and have been curating (on-and-off) ever since. I was originally just going to post the questions and poems that I made on that other thread, but I decided to include everyone else's, as well.
Some of the rhymes are weak, I admit. Call it artistic license. We're 15 years removed from one of them I'll be posting eventually, but I still remember it and how bad it was, but I'll still post it just to be a completionist.
Anyway, it's actually not George Stone, it's the other fella involved in that trade, the one involved in an unfortunate dune buggy accident. He played just 4 games with the Mets in '69, that's why I edited the poem to say "might have received" a ring ... because I'm not convinced a guy with 4 games in would have received one. Hopefully I didn't give it away too quickly, but I think I did.

5. I started my career in my hometown
but riding the bench got me down.
Even the thrill of a World Series
couldn't keep me from feeling dreary.
Then one day as happens in sport
they told me I was traded to New York.
I got my chance to be a regular at last,
and I showed some pop but my BA crashed.
They said .236 just wasn't fine
so back I was riding the pine.
My claim to fame that year
was anything but dear.
the fans were often heard to shout
the bum leads the team in strikeouts.

Re: Guess that Met
There's a lot of editorializing that's hard to confirm concretely, but I guess number three could be Rich Becker.
Re: Guess that Met
Herr Becker is a good guess, but the correct answer once hit a walk off grand slam against New York while playing for another team. Once again, I might have given this one away too quickly.
Re: Guess that Met
I might have said the correct answer's name in the post above ;-)
