Obviously, there's a lot of turnover going to happen (again) with the Mets' coaching staff over the coming weeks, but most immediately, Eric Hinske seems most at loose ends, with Eric Chavez returning to hitting coach and Jeremy Barnes demoted, so it seems most sensible to let him fill the base coach vacancy left by Joey Cora, at least in the imagination.

By the way, has everybody seen Hinske's back? Mercy.

The big surprise here seems to be Luis Guillorme's non-tendering. Obviously with his seemingly low offensive ceiling, inconsistent performance at the plate, and injuries, he's been of limited use of late, but a team that doesn't have a guy like Guillorme is sure looking for one. Even if his feet and his general athleticism don't match his hands, his hands are amazing, and kind of suggest that he's not as hopeless as all that at the plate.

But the Mets sure seemed to be done with him down the stretch in September.

The liberal attitude toward non-tendering brings three more guys onto the projected roster for now — including, suprisingly, Luisangel Acuña. Acuña hasn't appeared above AA and hit pretty poorly after joining Binghamton, so this seems unlikely to still be the alignment on April 1, but the roster has been torn down so much that only two players remain on the 40-player roster that aren't projected for the 26.

A picture of where the roster stands is below. We have some touch-ups to do with the coaching staff, but that's mostly fantasy anyhow. But the roster of players includes no conjecture on our part. It's a very real picture of where the Mets now stand. If nothing else, all those empy spots on the 40 suggests it's going to be a wild ride over the next 12 weeks.

Indeed it's true that Dom Chiti fulfilled his family destiny and returned last month to the team he came from. Danny Barnes, it has been reporting will indeed be returning to the staff this season. His official public-facing title through most of the season was merely "assistant coach" or "MLB assistant coach" as if that says anything, but late in the year, he would occasionally be described as "data coach," if and when he was described at all.

And why not? That data can't coach itself, but we guess he was a filter between the eggheads in the front office and the coaching staff. There's almost no actual scenario where he is moved to the bullpen by opening day, but if a game was to break out tonight, somebody has to be out there, and since his portfolio is so ambiguous, we're throwing the job to him.

Or maybe that should have been Glenn Sherlock. We don't know, but it's good to see Danny back. We still need to confirm the status of other peripheral staffers like Rafael Fernandez and Aaron Myers, but it seems, as too often seems to be the case, it's the whale that rises that gets the harpoon. Dave Racianiello may be the bullpen catcher forever, but if he ever accepts a promotion to bullpen coach, he'll be gone in two seasons.

Gibbons, Sarbaugh, and Richardson are more familiar faces in the American League. Richardson's coming from San Francisco, but the highlight of his brief MLB career seems to be scoring the winning run when Derek Jeter hit a walkoff single in his last trip to the plate.

He does, however, put the lie to the notion that first base coach is the designated role for the African-American staff. Sometimes, a team hires an Afro-Carribean for that spot

So there's that. These guys, it seems, have some work to do to earn their Mets stripes.

Doesn't strike out prodigious number as when he was younger but he throws a lot of innings, stays healthy, and keeps the ball down. Started his career as a thirdbaseman. His fastball is good enough to make his change his most effective pitch.

He can expect to start the season near the top of the Syracuse bullpen, and his signing pushed Deniel Núñez back toward the Binghamton picture.

A flurry of moves without a lot of roster impact. Severino slots into the #3 rotation spot, but probably will be down to the #5 position (some would hope lower) by camp's beginning. Butto returns to Syracuse to work and wait for his opportunity. Luisangel Acuña hopefully makes his own opportunity with his bare hands while reps go to Zach Short and Joey Wendle.

Young Vladi Guerrero's image is blurry because it's captured largely from video of him whacking balls into the stratosphere, but despite being only 17, he's got his older brother's mushy frame that he's going to have to work hard to keep weight off of.

Austin Adams (who you just know will be entering games to "Soul Bossa Nova") has a mostly un-notable track record as a capable-but-unremarkable journeyman reliever, but ... there's just one standout data point in his reacord. While he his 31 batters in 114 1/3 innings as a Major-Leaguer seems kind of high, it's mindblowing when you realize that 24 of those all came in 52 2/3 innings pitched for the Padres in 2021. Somehow, he actually led the league in guys plunked while working as an average-workload middle reliever. Sure enough, two of those plunks came in 3 1/3 innings against the Mets that year.

Fine waiver grabs here. Both catchers have options, both switch-hit, and both play regularly a corner positions (Hummell was mostly a firstbaseman in 2023), with their legs seemingly healthy enough to get around. Between the two of them, it's not unreasonable that one could emerge as a Clint Hurdle-type, allowing a team to live without fear when they remove a catcher from the game, floating around to other positions, pinch-hitting when the matchup is right, and grabbing the occasional mopup inning on the mound.

Both also come complete with funny names at no added charge.

The Mets lost pitcher Tyler Thomas to the Braves in the Rule V Draft.

They drafted pitcher Justin Slaten from the Rangers, but then traded him to the Red Sox for pitcher Ryan Ammons.

In the minor league rounds, they drafted catcher Donovan Antonia from the Reds and pitcher Alan Perdomo from the Rockies.

A big day.

Justin Slaten is currently toiling for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. I wonder if a player who changes organizations while in the AFL jumps squads (a Surprise suprise!), even though they have only a loose connection to the player's organization. I guess that they would, even though it would mess up two teams' rosters.

We cannot speak to the relative merits of Justin Slaten vs. Ryan Ammons, but the Mets managed to use the Rule V Draft to get a pitcher with no time burned on his professional clock, that they won't be forced to carry on their 40-player roster. So … yay?

Journeyman Michael Tonkin's older sister is married to former MLB slugger Jason Kubel. That's a good tip for you kids. If you want to get the girl, make a good impression on her family by helping her little brother into Major League Baseball. The two in-laws briefly played together on the Twins in 2014, as Kubel's career was winding down and Tonkin's was getting started.

Yeral Martinez may have slugged an underwhelming .399 as a 20-year-old at St. Lucie, but he's suddenly tipping the scales at 242 pounds, and the Marlins may sense some serious nascent power there.

More disappointing perhaps is seeing someone as delightfully goofy-looking as Tyler Thomas going, but we sure won't be wanting for Tylers. Thomas was one of three Tylers on the Syracuse roster at a single time last season. It is the age of Tyler.

Donovan Antonia has been reported as a catcher by some outlets, but he's never caught. What he appears to be is a scooty-built secondbaseman playing in the outfield either because his glove or arm can't cut it. He certainly has an athletic look to him, but he hasn't quite shown his lead tool yet. We guess that the Mets grabbing him despite his not having a position suggests they think a lead tool is in there.

Alan Perdomo has been in the Colorado system since 2018. He played in the DSL for five separate seasons, plus he went through the canceled 2020 season without graduating to stateside baseball. He's had some not-bad performances in there, certainly good enough to move up, so our two working theories are (1) that he made a lot of enemies, or maybe (2) he was, for some reason, completely unable to attain a visa. Whichever it is, having taken until last season to finally reach the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, he's got a long way to go if he's going to reach the 40-player roster before becoming a minor-league free agent at the end of 2024.

Maybe the Mets took him as revenge against the Rockies for grabbing Brendan Hardy.

Also "Alan Perdomo" is a nice name. While you don't usually find the name Alan arising from the Spanish-speaking world, Perdomo means "I Forgive," which is lovely. Tracing it to it's deepest Latinate roots, though, it may most literally mean "I Shoulder the Loss," which isn't perhaps the kind of forgiveness we're looking for.

We will miss Daison Acosta — in part because his firsst name sounds Korean-ish, and we were kind of hoping that he'd turn out to have some previously unreported Asian heritage, and in part because he was one of the last remaining Columbia Fireflies in the system.

The Jorge López deal, interestingly, hasn't yet appeared on the official transaction log. We're treating it as a done deal here and dating it to the day it was first reported, but physicals and stuff always make these things at least a little uncertain until they ain't. Reed Garrett has a somewhat higher profile than Sean Reid-Foley, but he's got an option year to burn, so in a Reed-Reid matchup, it's his roster spot that's most vulnerable. A lot has to shake out before it actually comes down to that, but that's where we are on paper.

Super Cooper — playing the corner infield spots as well as the corner outfield spots as well as catcher — comes in handy. But it looks like the Mets will have some shopping to do. While at least this injury (unlike the Diaz one) comes early in the off-season enough for them to pivot, it's hard to say how much they were looking for from Mauricio in 2024.

Hey! Trayce Thompson!! You're a Met!!!

It's unclear whether you're a Met of the Syracuse variety or the New York variant, as you've apparently signed a minor league contract.

Trayce was just terrific in a half a season mostly with LA in 2022, and equally terrible last season with the Dodgers and the White Sox. He somehow hit three homers and knocked in eight RBI in his season debut on April 1 and that single game turned out to represent about 520% of his output on the year, as it was straight downhill from then on.

He's alternated impressive and terribly unimpressive campaigns through much of his career, and that may be due to his ugly strikeout rate meaning that when he's going bad, he's pretty bad. But sometimes not.

Anyhow, the Mets stragegy of filling the pool from the shallow end has so far suggested that they should have a pretty good Syracuse squad.

The Frontier League does a pretty bad job of announcing transactions, but we at Mets Roster Central have no business pointing fingers. Apparently, almost immediately after his release by the Mets this past summer, catcher Oscar Campos caught on with the Tri-City ValleyCats for his third tenure with the club, and immediately hit two homers, one in each game of a doubleheader, on his first day back with the team. That's impressive as he barely ever played with the Mets, getting into eight games with Brooklyn back in 2021, three with St. Lucie in 2022, and just a single game with Syracuse in 2023.

Had the team re-signed him, he might have gotten into a negative number of games in 2024, and they'd he'd end up owing the team $$.

The "Tri-Cities" in the team's name refers to Albany, Schenectady, and Troy — which together make up New York State's Capital District. Other familiar names to toil with the ValleyCats this past season include Aaron Altherr and Garrison Bryant.

For an offseason that hasn't seemed rife with activity, we're starting to see some serious turnover. Cooper Hummel was mostly a placeholder, Tyrone Taylor (TyTay on the gossip pages) is currently in the running with DJ Stewart for Opening Day leftfielder.

This guy is pretty much the central casting go-to guy when you're looking for journeyman reliever — mullet, big guns, scratchy beard, rock 'n' roll name, roots in both Alabama and Mississippi, originally drafted by Cleveland, tenure with The Albuquerque Isotopes, a long history of getting battered around, yet retaining something in his stuff and his makeup that makes new teams gobble him up. If he didn't exist, he would've been created in fiction by any of a dozen writers.

In fact, his grandfather played for Washington in the 1950s, which sort of qualifies him for almost-fiction status as well, as the Senators of that era were immortalized in The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, and its musical adaptation, Damn Yankees.

The box above has Chad projected for Brooklyn. That may sound unlikely, but until camp begins — at which point we find out who is actually healthy — it isn't hard to find 25 or more relievers under contract with the team currently ahead of him in the pecking order. Despite being a seasoned veteran with big-league experience for two teams, that's how spotty his record is.

Harol had just a terrific year between AA and AAA in 2019, going 12-4 with a 3.01 ERA. He got a camp invite going into 2020 and was really looking like a guy to watch. But then the canceled season happened, and he didn't get to be part of the team's extended roster thingie of 2020, got hurt in camp in 2021, and never made it all the way back, or even particularly close, judging from the terrible numbers he's put up in his sporadic reappearances since. His chance in The Mexican League was brief and he got hit hard there too.

Team Israel vet Bubby Rossman is wintering in the Mexican Pacific League and doing pretty well. Time is running out at 31, and if he doesn't make it back to The Show, he can console himself that his one big-league inning, with the 2022 Phils, was a shutout one.

He has also close to achieving the journeyman ballplayer's version of the EGOT, having done time in The Atlantic League, The American Association, and The Can-Am League. Among the top indy circuits, only The Frontier League remains.
