Another guy with a 2022 fork sticking out of his back. I guess him and Severino can sit together on the plane.

Mike Puma reporting today that the Mets are showing strong interest in Giolito.
Mike Puma wrote:The Mets are showing strong interest in the right-hander, whose top selling point might be his ability to consume innings. Giolito, pitched 184 ¹/₃ innings last season — divided among the White Sox, Angels and Guardians — marking the fourth time since 2018 he surpassed 170 in a season.

He finished with 204 strikeouts last season, which ranked sixth in the American League.

Giolito had a solid first half with the White Sox last season, but beginning in mid-July went through a divorce and was later traded twice, factors that may have contributed to his shaky numbers after the All-Star break.

Overall, he finished 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA in 33 starts and his 41 homers allowed led the AL.

But the fact he is only 29 and received Cy Young award votes as recently as 2021 are positives for Giolito, who has also been linked to the Dodgers and Red Sox, among others, this winter.

He's been bad but he seems to fit the current bill:

1) cheap(er) compared to top tier guys
2) short-term deal pretty damn likely
3) could surprise everyone and be good again
bonus stuff
4) not over 30
5) durable

I vote yes.

Other than #4 these seem like Fred Wilpon criteria.

I'll sign up for a first half Lucas, please.
But those 41 HR scare me a bit.

No one would argue the Mets plan worked last year, but they paid $100MM in luxury taxes for trying. It's nothing like Wilpon.

Only if it's one year and heavy on incentives.

I'm reminded of that scene in Animal House where they're looking at slides of potential pledges; everyones moaning and groaning as the pictures come up, but somebody in back pipes up, "We need the dudes, man."

Right now we need the dudes. They have a 3-man starting staff at present.
The answer to the question "Can people really be that stupid?" is always "Yes."

I think it was "We need the dues," said in the response to the consideration of pledge Larry "Pinto" Kruger."

I feel like I can confidently predict Giolito giving the team (whatever team he signs with) one third of a season of excellence, one third of utter averageness, and one third of utter nothingness — not necessarily in that order.

He's not that deep into his career, and he started 33 games last year, but man, he brought almost nothing the second half.

Giolito reminds me of Vince Velasquez

Hard thrower gopher thrower

They need pitchers and dues so have at it. Better than Flounder going to the hill

I have strong interest in Kate Beckinsale. But that doesn't mean I'll get her.

But we’ll need some pitching sooner or later.

I see a gopher grower, who gave up 41 HR last year, signing to pitch half his games in Fenway Park.
And I chuckle.

In a sense the Red Sox traded Chris Sale for Lucas Giolito

Giolito reminds me of Jerad Eichoff, tee time!

They were already said to be in on Montgomery.

That leaves us with Snell.

Or with Megill or Lucchesi.

Or Hamel or Vasil or Scott. I'm really hoping one of those three turns out to be like Jacob deGrom in 2015. I think this year's Mets rotation needs a fabulous surprise.
