It's a nice tribute to Ron Hodges to employ a third-string catcher, however briefly.
Re: The Mets Collect a Hummel
The Mets have also claimed Tyler Heineman, another backup C but he has a good defensive WAR.

I'm getting antsy, which happens every year in the weeks leading up to the Winter Meetings.
While they should be going for players (and pitchers) who can create wins above replacement, they seem to have been concentrating on replacement. (OK, maybe not Wendle)
And those roster spots are filling up.

I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

Re: The Mets Collect a Hummel
Actually that statement was more circa April of 2001.
On April 12th, Desi pinch-ran for Piazza in the 9th inning of a scoreless game vs Atlanta and was thrown out stealing.
The Mets would go on to win the game in the 10th but if Desi couldn't steal a base, the reasoning went, he had no business being on the roster.
That touched off a lengthy war of words largely featuring myself vs 'Nique of Harlem plus some other guy whose handle I can't remember (Goon?).
Desi would go on to steal 13 of 18 bases that season, put up a 119 OPS+ (the Backup SS put up offense nearly 20% better than league average!),
plus took the mound on a couple occasions. In my view that trumps getting caught stealing in early April but ymmv.

I remembered it as being — quite possibly from MetsSC — a lament in response to the Mets not having not yet made a big splash in the offseason player market.
Relaford indeed ended up having an offensive season second on the team only to Piazza.

Mets cash in on spiking Hummel market, trading Cooper to San Francisco for the all-popular bag o' cash.
Re: The Mets Collect a Hummel
That's hummeling to be sent to SF for cash, Mets should have asked for a MINI Cooper

The answer to the question "Can people really be that stupid?" is always "Yes."

I guess this means he won't have to buy the store-brand potato chips this week.
Re: The Mets Collect a Hummel
They were going to lose him, so a deal is good bidness. They can probably really finance the hype squad with this dough.
