Memories of David Robertson

Post by G-Fafif » Fri Jul 28, 2023 12:09 pm

Didn't make me nervous. Highest of praise for a closer.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Not a specific memory, so much as a general reflection that apart from not having a wipeout pitch, he was everything you wanted a closer to be. He knew where the ball was going, he kept his head after losing a guy instead of compounding any mistakes. He didn't complain if he was used as a setup guy, asked to go multiple innings, or wasn't used for a week. He made no excuses if he failed, did that precious little, and when he did, he didn't allow it to carry over into his next appearance.

He was supportive of his fellow relievers, backed his manager, and wanted to stay when he was told to leave. I'd marry the guy if he wasn't from Alabama. It's hot and sticky enough here in the mid-Atlantic.

i was somewhat unimpressed when they signed him, and in fact told by a random phillies phan that i would come to hate him.

i suppose he might be right if he ends up helping the marlins to win dramatic playoff games against us this year, but otherwise, i was really impressed by him. the one pitcher out of all of 'em that i had to worry the least about.

Blue collar old fashioned reliever.
Didn't have dazzling stuff.
Just got guys out.
And that was all that we asked.

The only person in the Mets 2023 bullpen that I had cahn-fidence in.

I always felt comfortable when he came in. Had an All-Star worthy 2023. Outside of Raley recently, I had no real faith in anyone else. But when Robertson came in, I didn't fret. Another great name we had for too-short a time.

Working backwards, first one. I had seen Elvis Costello a few weeks ago and this song was in my head when I heard DR was traded. Here you go.

Oh it's so funny to be traded after this long, man.
And with the way you look I understand
That you had tried your best
Once it was clear the trumpets wouldn't play this year
This team became a mess.

I'm not going to get too sentimental
Like those other Bobby valentines,
'Cause you were just another tradeable asset
And so now it was just your time.

Robertson, I know this team was killing you.
Oh, Robertson, you looked good in blue.

Some talking-head moron in the preseason made a comment about Robertson not being ready for the pressure of taking over the closer job in New York from the great Edwin Diaz.

Because, you know, he never had big shoes to fill in New York in the shadow of a legend before. Probably the most I've wanted to punch a talking-head this year.

Likeable guy with a solid season. I felt bad trading him, but there was nothing to be gained by keeping him.

(I will probably just copy and paste this when we get to Tommy Pham.)

No new memories of D-Rob forthcoming, as he signs with the world champion Texas Rangers.

Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

I wish the Mets would have offered him that.

That's $11-12 million worth of blood pressure medicine - for my blood pressure.
The current makeup of the bullpen leaves me nervous.

Best of luck to him, but the Mets may well have gotten the last bit of good baseball out of David Robertson. Certainly, his performance with Miami over the last two months and briefly in the post-season provides some evidence in support of that notion.

He did a good job, but it's probably more likely than not that this year's David Robertson isn't David Robertson.

I would prefer the Mets to have gone with a one year deal to Robertson over the cast of retreads they have signed to minor league deals. He could have been a nice addition to a bullpen in dire need of quality arms.

I still expect them to add somebody. It just won't be David Robertson. On Mets Hot Stove they floated three names, including Hector Neris. (I don't remember the others.)

Well, they have nine relievers on the roster without options, and presumably eight spots to fill. If they intend to bring in someone else, it has to be a clear upgrade, because it will cost them in blood.
