Close Shave

Post by MFS62 » Sun Feb 04, 2024 10:13 am

Do you shave?
How Often?
Do you have a beard?
A moustache?
Do you use a blade razor or electric shaver/trimmer?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I was gonna ask the same. Very dissatisfied with my shaving lately and at a loss.

Was into Cremo shave cream but it was too thick for most cheap razor. Moved over to cheaper shaving cream (Edge) now skin getting irritated.

Been using disposable razors--a different style each time because they are so dissatisfying for various reasons -- and know I should upgrade but to what? My barber recommended I do the Wilkinson Sword thing but I wonder how much blood I'll lose.

I also considered going electric. That might be my next move.

I grow the beard every fall and shave it every spring. It's fun to see how much new gray I pick up year by year. I have an electric beard edger/trimmer for that.

When shaving I use cheap-ish razors (the ones in the 4 razors for $4 range) and Edge shaving cream with moisturizing protection. I shave about once per week so each razor only lasts 2-3 shaves, but that means each pack is good for a month or more. As long as I don't skimp on the shaving cream my skin is pretty forgiving

I have a beard that I trim once a week - I use Henry’s razors, which I change out once a week. No shaving cream since I shave right after I step out of the shower.

For some weird reason, I remember we had a thread on shaving not long after I joined the CPF, probably around 2007. Guess we're due for another one.

I have a goatee and I use a plain old Gilette Mach 3, usually with a name brand shaving gel. I find whatever I can get at Costco works great, gels are less messy than foams and work better, and there really is a difference between the name brands and the store-brand knockoffs as far as shaving gels. For the blades, the cheap ones work fine, but don't last as long.

The non-disposable razors are a big improvement over the disposable ones.

Hot tip - women's blades fit men's shavers (at least for Gillette) and are a bit easier on the skin. More expensive, though.

I have a Braun electric that I use for travel and for beard trimming.

I used to have to go to the office every day, and I've also been told by pretty much every woman I've ever dated that my 5 o'clock shadow is particularly abrasive. So I used to shave every day. Now that I'm in a long distance relationship with both my job and my SO, I shave about once every three days unless I need to be looking particularly sharp.

I've been both hairy (for me) and bearded since a mid-November. What a
grey ass look that was. To honor Groundhog Day I buzzed everything off with
the ol' Wahl and then shaved both head and face with Dollar Shave Club razor
and Barbasol Sensitive Skin shave cream.

I'm no longer a fan of Dollar Shave Club and will soon axe them. I have months
of shipments to use up then not sure what I'll use next.

I shave every day.
I've never, ever had a beard. I had a moustache briefly in the early 80's because I thought it would make me look older. (Sigh. Those were the days.)
I've been using a Norelco electric razor for decades (not the same one obviously).
I can count on one hand the number of times I've used shaving cream on my face in my entire life.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

I shave once or twice a week depending on how stubbly I wanna be. Most I can shave is every other day or all I’m doing is scraping skin.

I go cremo and a Harry’s blade that lasts me months.

Bearded since October; it may or may not (probably yes) disappear by Spring, only partly because it's pure white at this point.
Still shave the neck and cheekbones (almost) daily but that takes < a minute and the neck part is usually done in the shower
(regular soap works at least as well as shaving cream) with a disposable razor. Trim the beard length maybe once a week with
a battery powered trimmer with several interchangeable length options.

I use a Braun S3 electric razor/trimmer. I shave every day, if going to work and seeing patients. On days off, I generally shave every other day. I get pretty scraggly (and mostly white) if I go more than 48 hours without shaving.

I grew a beard once, during the initial COVID lockdown. I couldn't work, couldn't get a haircut, so I decided to stop shaving. I made it about 6 weeks, before I shaved the beard off. My wife hated my beard and I didn't like that it was a blend of blond, dark brown, gray and bright white. It looked like a calico cat. I don't intend to grow a beard again.

I shave one or two times a week.
I have a tough beard, and have tried electrics. But to get a close shave with them, I have to push hard and my face gets irritated.
I use a disposable shaver and thought the Bic twin blade was good. But since have found that the house brand of twin blade disposable razors from Target (white handle) gives me the best shave of anything I've ever tried.
I use Barbasol extra thick foam. Gels don't lather enough for me. Maybe because we have hard water.

I shave 3 or 4 times a week. Gilette Fusion razor - the blades last a few weeks. Have had a few beards, mist recently a Covid beard, but ultimately it isn’t a great look for me.

I had a beard from around 2000 to 2019, went clean shaven for a few months, then the beard came back for another year and now I'm back to clean shaven.

I used shaving cream for a long time, but got to a point where a hand-held razor was no longer doing a good job on my mustache area and my chin, so I got a Norelco shaver. I then discovered that the shaver wasn't doing a good job on my throat. (I assume my skin and/or my hair has changed with age?) So I use the shaver every few days and I'll do the shaving cream thing on my throat once a week or so, depending on how scruffy I feel or if I'm going somewhere.

Three times a week. Gilette Mach 3 blades and Edge Gel. The post-shave routine, and the pricier products here, is what makes the difference-- Kiehls Facial Ultra Cleanser and moisturizer.

My beard, when I do grow it, has turned from young Santa red to old Santa grey. Such is life.

This thread was just what I needed to get off my ass and do something about my shaving slump.

Based on some of the above, I ordered a Harry's razor with detachable blades. Also because I'm a rebel. Tried that Proraso Italian shaving cream that comes put of an oversize toothpaste tube.

One shave in looking good, no cuts, and my chin smells like an Italian

When I was shaving daily I used a double edge safety razor , best shave ever , premium shaving cream that I would lather up with horse hair brush .
