Guess that Met
Re: Guess that Met
Bob Johnson is correct. As for #5, one might say it has something to do with his looks. And Koosman is correct—do you know what year that happened?
Re: Guess that Met
Well, it happened in 1978, naturally, as nobody but Seaver would start on opening day before that.
Re: Guess that Met
That's correct, well done. A couple new questions have been added, with hints added for the rest.
1. Who penned the "Marvelous Marv" locker sign that gave the media the idea to refer to Throneberry as Marvelous Marv?
Hint: Pitched for the Mets from 1962 to 1964.
Hint: Was 8-19 in 1962.
Hint: Pitched for the Reds from 1957 to 1961 before joining the Mets.
Hint: Was involved in this trade: "May 8, 1964: Traded by the New York Mets with a player to be named later to the Milwaukee Braves for Roy McMillan. The New York Mets sent Adrian Garrett (June 17, 1964) to the Milwaukee Braves to complete the trade."
Hint:
Hint: Was 12-34 with a 5.22 ERA in his Mets career.
Hint: (from Wikipedia): "After receiving a master's degree in thermodynamics, [he] retired in 1964 at age 28 to take a job with the Chrysler Corporation. He then worked in senior management positions at Rockwell International and at Masco, and later became a professor of industrial management at Northwestern University."

2. In April 2010, a Met hit a home run off a former World Series winning teammate. Please give me the name of the Met and please give me the name of the pitcher he hit it off of who was a former World Series winning teammate.
Hint: The pitcher played for the Mets in 2011 and 2012 and the other individual, a catcher, played for them in 2010.

3. The Mets were going to trade for Dickie Thon. The deal was canceled at the last minute by Owner Linda de Roulet. What was that reason?
Hint: Consider the year Thon was born when this trade might have happened.

4. What former Mets pitcher gave up Pete Rose's 4000th career hit? (Hint: He wasn't a Met at the time he gave up Rose's 4000th career hit.)

5. When Pete Rose had a 44 game hitting streak which broke Tommy Holmes's National League record 37 game hitting streak—what Mets pitcher did Rose get a hit off of to tie Holmes's streak of 37 and what Mets pitcher did Rose get a hit off of to break Holmes' streak at 38? 5. Jim Bunning's Fathers Day no hitter?
Re: Guess that Met
Number four is Zat Pachry and Swaig Cran.
Re: Guess that Met
It wasn't Matlack, but a good guess. It was the other Met from the era not named Seaver that accumulated a lot of wins...It was more than just a no-hitter, it was a perfect game, but Jim Bunning's performance is correct. Zachry and Swan are correct, as well. New questions have been added, with hints added for the others.

Re: Guess that Met
Five is Tom Seaver and ... I'll say ... Pedro Martinez.
Re: Guess that Met
Seaver threw plenty of one-hitters with New York and Martinez contributed, as well, however neither gave up their lone hits to an opposing pitcher. One might've been an early Met who was once traded for Nick Willhite and the other might've been an incorrect answer recently given by another member on a different question.
Re: Guess that Met
I'll say 4 is Terry Leach.
Re: Guess that Met
It wasn't Leach, but that seems like an obvious choice. The correct answer wasn't with the Mets long, but he did cram quite a bit of success into relatively few innings. In just over 22 frames one year, he had a 1.61 ERA.
Re: Guess that Met
New day, new hints added above.
Re: Guess that Met
New day, new hints added.
Re: Guess that Met
Number 5b is clearly Jon Matlack. I'll go with Bob Shaw for 5a.
Re: Guess that Met
Matlack is correct. Bob Shaw is incorrect—the correct answer might or might not have been traded by the New York Mets to the California Angels for Nick Willhite.
Re: Guess that Met
Then you're teeing up Jack Hamilton for me.
I was leaning toward him, but he felt unlikely as he wasn't one to finish what he started, even in an age where that was much more common.
Also, the Mets used him more frequently out of the pen.

Re: Guess that Met
I think the current #3 refers to Jerry Cram, who pitched a bunch of innings (eight?) in that extra-inning marathon in 1974 that ended with Bake McBride scoring on a pickoff throw. Bob Murphy talked about that game all the time.
I thought his record had been broken by a nine-inning stint, but that might not have been scoreless.

Re: Guess that Met
The pitcher pictured in question 1 is Miguel Batista, but I don't really understand the question
Re: Guess that Met
The Catcher in (1) is Rod Barajas.
Re: Guess that Met
Cram, Batista and Barajas are correct. Batista and Barajas were teammates with Arizona when they beat the Yankees in 2001. Two new questions have been added.
1. The Mets were going to trade for Dickie Thon. The deal was canceled at the last minute by Owner Linda de Roulet. What was that reason?
Hint: Consider the year Thon was born when this trade might have happened.
Hint: It had something to do with his age.
Hint: His name "Dickie" is considered a diminutive.
Hint: De Roulet thought he might have been too ........ something. What was that something?

2. A previous question was "What two pitchers in Mets history threw a one-hitter and the only hit they gave up was to the pitcher?". The answers were Jon Matlack and Jack Hamilton. Can you name the two pitchers they surrendered their hits to?

3. Who are the only two pitchers in Mets history to strike out the side on nine pitches?

4. The Mets went 9-1 in the first 10 games in which Ike Davis appeared. In those games, Ike hit .355 with a .548 SLG, one homer, 3 doubles, 6 RBIs, and 5 runs scored. It's a pretty rare feat for a team to do put up a 9-1 record in the first ten games in which a batter (non-pitcher) appears, now having occurred only 32 times in the years 1920-1939, 1952-2010. But even more rare is when a team puts up a 10-0 record in the first ten games a batter plays with a team. It has happened a mere five times in those years. And happily -- for this thread -- one of those five times was by the New York Mets. Name the batter who helped the Mets win the first ten games in which he played. (This question is through April 2010, I'm not sure if it has happened since then).

5. An event more rare than hitting for the cycle, one Met player ran for the cycle, getting himself thrown out at every base in one game. Who was this Met?
