Re: Guess that Met
Let me check into this here thread again. It's been a while. The immaculate innings were pitched by Nolan Ryan and David Cone. I'm surprised that deGrom didn't do this during 2021-22, when he was about as unhittable as any pitcher ever was (when healthy).
The two pitchers that spoiled Mets one-hitters were one-time Met himself, Ray Sadecki and John Curtis.

Re: Guess that Met
Here's an offshoot: Three Mets pitchers pitched three pitch innings. Name them. BTW, with the newfangled furshlugginer rules, it's now possible to pitch a two-pitch inning. Here's how: in extra innings, the pitcher picks off the Manfred runner at second base for one out and retires the first two batters on a total of two pitches. Actually, now that I think of it, a pitcher could get all three outs on one pitch thanks to all of the new rules but this scenario, though technically possible, is extremely unlikely. Here's what has to happen: In extra innings, the pitcher picks off the stupid free runner on second base. Then he intentionally walks the first batter. Under the new rules, the pitcher can simply "call" for the intentional walk rater than throw four pitches out of the strike zone. Then with his first pitch of the inning, he induces a double play.
Wait a minute. There's more! I just thought of this. He could retire the side without throwing a single pitch. He walks the second batter just like he walked the first batter and then picks him off, too! Or the runners could make outs getting caught stealing.

Re: Guess that Met
A simpler one pitch scenario is an intentional walk and a triple play.

Re: Guess that Met
That's correct, well done.
1. The Mets went 9-1 in the first 10 games in which Ike Davis appeared. In those games, Ike hit .355 with a .548 SLG, one homer, 3 doubles, 6 RBIs, and 5 runs scored. It's a pretty rare feat for a team to do put up a 9-1 record in the first ten games in which a batter (non-pitcher) appears, now having occurred only 32 times in the years 1920-1939, 1952-2010. But even more rare is when a team puts up a 10-0 record in the first ten games a batter plays with a team. It has happened a mere five times in those years. And happily -- for this thread -- one of those five times was by the New York Mets. Name the batter who helped the Mets win the first ten games in which he played. (This question is through April 2010, I'm not sure if it has happened since then).
Hint: Played for the Mets in 2008 and 2009.

2. An event more rare than hitting for the cycle, one Met player ran for the cycle, getting himself thrown out at every base in one game. Who was this Met?
Hint: Wore numbers 10 and 11 with New York.

Re: Guess that Met
We we speak of being "elected" to the Hall of Fame, we tend to be referring to players who came through the BBWAA. At least, that's the distinction Bill James makes, and he refers to the likes of Richie Ashburn, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, and Joe Torre as "selected."Cowtipper wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 2:54 pm Eddie Murray, Tom Glavine, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Yogi Berra, Richie Ashburn, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, Joe Torre, Duke Snider and Mike Piazza are all correct.
